L.A.’s bottled water spending increases after ban

LOS ANGELES — A city controller’s report has found that 13 city departments increased their spending on bottled water in 2008 despite a January 2006 memo from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa asking departments to ban the purchase of bottled water, the Los Angeles Times reported March 17 in its L.A. Now news blog.

As WaterTech Online® reported, Villaraigosa banned municipal bottled water purchases after handling criticism that city agencies were buying bottled water for their employees while publicly promoting the benefits of city water.

City Controller Laura Chick’s report found that in 2008 city departments spent more than $184,000 on water sold by such companies as Sparkletts, Danone and Arrowhead. The Times reported in 2006 that city officials had purchased nearly $89,000 worth of bottled water in 2004 and 2005.

The mayor’s spokesman, Matt Szabo, told L.A. Now that the mayor’s office is reviewing Chick’s report.

3. I wish people would think about the amount of space taken
up in landfills for bottled water.Pitch in at your job and buy a water filter if tap water is not to your liking.
