What if his name was James Muhammad?
"Over the past week the blog has been abuzz with a question: When a trust fund baby millionaire white supremacist in Belfast, Maine, who had applied to join the National Socialist Movement, and was pissed off that Barack Obama was elected president, tries to make a dirty bomb, only to be stopped when the wife he physically abused shoots his brains out in this home, why is it that no one in the media isn't talking about it? Might be that whole white supremacist thing. If his name was James Muhammad as opposed to James Cummings Fox News would have had filed dozens of stories the first week it broke. In the Nation of Cowards Department comes a scenario that we are frankly pretty much used to: the media and especially conservatives deliberately avoiding a story involving white supremacists where they would not have avoided it if it was a person of color doing far less. Even now it is only Rachel Maddow that will deal with it, dedicating a segment to her Thursday show on the matter. Let's see if her fellow reporters and pundits will soon see fit to follow suit, but considering how much of a pass they are giving Ann Coulter on her defense of the Council of Conservative Citizens (quick name one media outlet that has had her on their air and confronted her on it - beeep! too late!) don't hold your breath. Meanwhile, one of those media outlets just gave radio show host Glenn Beck a forum to defend a guy who just went on a killing spree in Alabama a pass on the basis that he might have been upset with all the political correctness in the country, and "actor" Chuck Norris to call for Texas to secede from the union. Look at it this way, we decimated them in the last election. At least we care enough to do something!"

1.  Trust Fund Dirty Bomber
http://www.armscontrolwonk.com/2209/white-supremicist-trust-fund-dirty-bomber

<snip> Cummings grew up in California and lived in Texas before moving to Maine in August 2007. Although Robbins said Cummings told him he made his money in Texas real estate, it appears that the actual source of his wealth was a trust fund established by his father, a prominent landowner in the Northern California city of Fort Bragg. An Internet search of the James B. Cummings Trust indicated that it has an annual income of $10 million.

2. In a way that was "white privilege" working for him.
The media, local or national, didn't dwell on it because of the fact that he was white and not muslim, black, hispanic, etc.
