Quit Talking About My Weight, Laura Ingraham by Meghan McCain

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-03-...

Recently my not-size-0 body has come under fire again by the conservative pundit Laura Ingraham. On her radio show recently, she sarcastically commented that I was too plus-sized to be a cast member on the television show The Real World and needled me about my weight with a comment about Barbie's 50th anniversary. Instead of intellectually debating our ideological differences about the future of the Republican Party, Ingraham resorted to making fun of my age and weight, in the fashion of the mean girls in high school. I responded on Twitter by saying, To all the curvy girls out there, dont let anyone make you feel bad about your body. I love my curves and you should love yours too.

My mother was constantly slammed for being too skinny, so the weight obsession of the media and our culture goes both ways. It also goes to both parties.

But now that numerous media outlets seem to have picked up on our tiff, I believe it warrants a more thoughtful response than can be contained in 140 characters. I have been teased about my weight and body figure since I was in middle school, and I decided a very long time ago to embrace what God gave me and live my life positively, attempting to set an example for other girls who may suffer from body image issues. I have nothing to hide: I am a size 8 and fluctuated up to a size 10 during the campaign. Its ridiculous even to have this conversation because I am not overweight in the least and have a natural body weight.

1. Good for her.
I'm about the same size as Meghan, which is what I can maintain fairly easily without resorting to starvation and/or 3 hours a day at the gym.

2. I almost hate to say it...
...but despite our ideological differences, Meghan McCain is kind of cool.

KIND OF. :)

6. She'll be cool when she eventually realizes she's a Democrat.
Until then she's just a tool.

5. i may not agree wtih meghan mccain on things, but that doesn't mean
that i think its right to make comments on her weight. What Laura Ingram did was prove that she has nothing to add to the conversation. Otherwise she would have gone after ideas, not personal attacks. Obviously the woman has no valid argument to be making. Meghan McCain must have been right, so Ingram had to try to insult the girl's looks. I'm glad Meghan McCain stood up for herself.

7. The only reason Ingraham is doing this is because outing kids to their parents doesn't fly anymore.
She is the quintessential high school mean girl.

8. Unfortunately for Meghan McCain, Republican pundits have nothing else to offer. . .
in counter to McCain's quite sensible call for civility, than to criticize her appearance (and any other facile fact presented to their very limited minds).

I hope McCain continues her quixotic quest to bring wingnuts to their senses. She'll not succeed, of course, but the right wing responses to her will help highlight the petty nature of what passes for conservative thought.

9. Good for her
She is not over weight. She is a beautiful young woman.

People need to stop using appearance as a way to instantly devalue women.

10. I'm quite skinny when I wear a size 8 or 10. Anything smaller, for me,
makes me into a bag of bones. I don't know of any one who wants to look like Ann Colter or Laura Ingraham. I know there is a rule among those who have to be in front of the camera to be ten pounds under weight because the camera supposedly puts the illusion of ten extra pounds on them, well almost everyone except Oprah. However, Meghan was on with Rachel last week and she looked just right to me. She's right about Laura coming across as one of the mean girls in high school. She was probably one of the mean girls in high school and never grew up.

12. Me too. But I'm fairly tall. On a 5' tall woman it would probably
look somewhat plump.

13. Agree
It is a surprise to see that at a size 8, I am obese.

And has Laura Ingram gotten a good look at most Republican-types? Not missing many meals, and that's at McDonald's!

11. The sad, lonely, anorexic conservative female talkers
They are too waspish for their Stepford-wife loving conservative males to want them, considering the only females conservative males want are the ones stroking their egos and popping babies like candy out of a Pez dispenser, so they starve themselves and harp on others.

Totally sick.

14. In the Republic world...
Ingraham and Coulter are considered sexy. Meghan is only a target because she doesn't spew the Freeper doctrine in its entirety.

Didn't hear anything about her being "overweight" during the primaries. Be yourself, Meghan. Don't let the fools get to you. (Any more than they already have, that is.)
