The USA produces basically crap, nothing anymore (the rich, you know, could get so much richer getting rid of those stinkin' American workers and shipping production elsewhere). So, we became a nation of paper pushers. Primarily we are insurance company and financial institution paper-pushers. And, the money flowed from all over the globe because we were THE financial center of the universe. Oppps, now the world knows we are crooks, liars and bank robbers. (You aren't going to put your money in a bank where the officers of the bank embezzle on a daily basis)! Who the hell would trust us anymore?? Perhaps a few hangings in the public square (like ye olde bank robbers of the Wild West) would restore confidence....and a few politicians who aided and abetted would be a nice touch to add.
