I was in opposition to this hypothetical in the beginning of the year, but I'm starting to support it more and more.

2. The question presumes a government shutdown because of a cut in military money - why?
Do we expect Bush to raid the money set aside for other areas to keep the war going?

6. Hell yeah.
Frankly, my concern stopped being for America and started being for the innocent victims of our invasion when we invaded. I'm for shutting down everything and crippling our economy if that's what it takes to make America do the right thing and get out of Iraq. We have slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent victims with this illegal war. We have forfeited the right to consider our comfort as a priority in ending this atrocity.

7. my comfort isnt the concern
my concern is the millions of people depending on social security or medicaid/medicare for their well-being. the shut down of those programs for any notable amount of time could cause serious health consequences back at home. As such i wouldnt sacrifice those programs if there was anyway around it

12. Wouldn't only a prolonged shutdown
affect such established programmes?

Perhaps there could be a limited shutdown, where Dems could just deal with these essentials?

17. When Clinton shut down the government
I don't recall that happening. Parks, government buildings, etc, shut down first. SSA and Medicare, I think, are funded differently.

Anyway, that's all what I meant by "comfort." We have slaughtered or caused the slaughter of close to a million people and have crippled the entire nation of Iraq for decades. We've destroyed the quality of life, and the very life, of millions. It's easy to blame it on Bush, but we as a nation allowed it to happen. The first priority to me is ending the occupation. If Bush wants to shut down our government and make life more difficult for people here, that's his fault. I don't think the people would stand it very long. They want our occupation of Iraq to end, and Bush drawing this line in the sand will further destroy his support. So hell yeah, shut it down if that's what Bush makes us do. Get us out of there. If we suffer for it, so be it. Karma, and all that.

Then we should talk about how much money we should be required to spend fixing what we broke.

8. Why not?
Shutting down a rogue, out-of-control, Constitution shredding, cabal of political terrorists is not shutting down a bona fide government at all. That is, unless you are of the opinion that a government does not exist to represent The People.

Currently there are several, vested and very special interests running the entire show and being well served in a state-of-the-art way. That should be clear to those who study and monitor the matter. Unlike the old McDonald's sign, (icon and symbol of the Fall that it has been), instead of millions or billions served, the new banner over this country reads: "Only millionaires and billionaires served." The only ones who do not see that yet are people living in the bubbles of culture and fate that keep them insulated. They are the ones in for the biggest and deepest shocks of all if they are not buoyantly hovering in the real, more secure and resilient layers of the minority -- the upper, five percentile. Everyone else gets to go straight to hell, do not collect your welfare/Medicare/pension/social security ... go straight to hell without seeing Go!

Shut it down? Of course! That would save so much time, trouble, effort, death, blood, and interments in camps, etc., for us commoners. It would be like squeezing the proboscis of a mosquito before it can suck any more blood from its host. Shutting it down might bring a tangible crisis, which, though potentially uncomfortable, would be a real potential for change and transformation. No matter how you slice it, our way of life is going into trauma and at a pace so accelerated, television and the MSM have no time or inclination, (because of the controlling masters) to deal with, report, or document the overall extent and nature of this very crucial time in our, (the World's) history. In that case, the evolution/revolution/devolution just won't be televised -- get over your expectations of it.

Okay, get a grip on it. You are probably thinking, "OMFG! My security! The Government is like a parent and I need it so bad! What could happen? Don't shut it down! PLEASE! I don't like to go camping, either!"

Well, calm down now. Compare this potential to you, yours, your children, their children, (for all of time) groveling at the feet of the rich as servants and slaves. They, unlike their predecessors, have the technology now to do that. Stop kidding yourself. History teaches a lot, (as biased as most of it is) but not how to deal with such high levels of TAXPAYER-funded technology that is largely used to exploit weaker humans, subjugate them, destroy them, or control them. Yes, HIGH technology, (just old technology jacked-up) is a two-edged sword weighted in the favor of who holds and controls it. How much of it do you and your family control, (with the emphasis on CONTROL)?

To shut this whole mess down, (who can make war with the BEAST?) would be uncomfortable and potentially chaotic, but so is getting rid of the monkey when getting off heroin. Hopefully, it brings a potential for something better. We are so addicted to what we call government, (but acts nothing much like a good parent who is only there to look out for your better interests)that we can't even imagine the power and strength within ourselves, our families, and our communities. We are addicted and hopelessly dependent on something that weaves a magic spell cast upon the airwaves, (that we USED to own) 24/7, and it is washing us away ... our minds ... our hearts ... our own meaning ... our validity, honor, and, most of all, our real and visceral connection to the very NATURE that made it possible for us to be what we are and do what we do, individually or collectively. Take away nature, (at this point) and all of our ideas, questions, complaints and such are moot points.

If we don't have the courage to drive a stake through the vampire's heart, by whatever means that are necessary, then we will have to get used to being sucked as dry as possible as often as they please. We must awaken and arise to this occasion, because, whether you realize it or not, whether you believe it or not, (and you most likely believe a lot these days, rather than struggle to truly know) the sacrafices to come are NOTHING compared to any that we make in the short-term. Oh, and I did mention your children and theirs, ad infinitum, right?

Damn. To think of all it took in the history of our species to get where we are and to see how we are collectively sleeping and blowing the whole thing because we are being mislead by the flotsam and jetsam that rises to the top and gets to pretend it is good, righteous, and without a criminal and sociopathic nature. From having almost nothing in the way of tools or technology, we were, as a species, able to span eons of time while the cycles of nature pushed and pulled our naked little hides around the planet. We have managed to survive the elements, disease, famine, and genocide, and now we are going to succumb to a posse of clowns that, because their Machiavellian ways and Draconian methods, have floated to the top of the septic tank that they have turned, (almost on their own) everyday life on this planet into.

How pathetic can flopping over like a fish out of water and gasping your last breath at the fisherman be, considering all that? What kind of example of the species are we commoners if it only takes some flashing lights, LCD's, advertising, propaganda, talk shows, dumbed down eduction, smoke and mirrors, etc., to turn a large number of us into willing prey, passive participants in our own cultural rape, and child-like molestees subject to nothing more than the sins of the Patriarchs who judiciously and professionally play our Father who Art in Heaven. They know the game and how to play us, but do we know how it is played and that we are all the pawns?

Shut it down. Cut the blood off from the tumor -- it works! Starve the parasite now, before it kills the host. Or will they just cull the population and let THEIR, (not our) technology raise them to their own Utopia after we all experience HELL ON EARTH? You know, I do think that is the plan.

Sink or swim. Break the bondage now while you can. These are the times that try men's, women's, children's souls. Action is all you have left and the time is obviously neigh. Send not for whom the talk-show host sings, they sing for thee!

Oh, and I don't exist!

16. Yes, I would, but the funny thing is
That if you defund the war, you need not shut the government down. You simply bury the supplemental war funding bills in committee and thus starve the beast.

19. I don't want to cut off funds
I want a timetable. President Bush will have his funds but he has to agree to a timetable.
If he doesn't sign it...then HE is the one who is denying the funds that Congress gave him for the soldiers.

Edited on Wed Mar-28-07 10:26 AM by dicksteele
I actually responded before I realized:
Oh, wait...this isn't a real thread, it's a drive-by.

Probably intended to generate some juicy quotes that
can be taken out of context to "prove" that Dems hate
Murka and support "shutting it down".
