who are Republicans for reasons I can't begin to understand. They may be confused, stubborn, naive, one-issue voters, etc. They may even be hypocritical. But they're not hateful disgusting assholes.

One friend of mine is a talented artist, married to an artist, lives in one of the most liberal suburbs of Chicago, has a gay brother (with a partner and children) to whom she is very close, is really into natural foods and natural medicine, does yoga, etc. Everything about her would suggest that she's a total lefty, yet I found out the hard way that she's a Republican. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. She's a lovely person and I like her a lot but we can't discuss politics. If the Bush years didn't change her mind, nothing will.

worked with because it was an art department full of liberal artists. We've speculated but have no idea why. I *think* she came from a military family and I know she's religious, not that either quality makes one a Republican. I truly don't understand it. If you knew her, you'd be just as perplexed.
