Retribution-Recompense .... Why we can't "get past" this financial debacle
Edited on Sat Mar-07-09 08:39 PM by SoCalDem
Remember what Mom always told you when you were little, and you took a playmate's toy & made them cry? Mom said "Go tell them you're sorry, and give them back their toy".

Definitions of recompense:

* noun: the act of compensating for service or loss or injury
* noun: payment or reward (as for service rendered)
* verb: make payment to; compensate
* verb: make amends for; pay compensation for

Definitions of retribution:

* noun: the act of correcting for your wrongdoing
* noun: a justly deserved penalty
* noun: the act of taking revenge (harming someone in retaliation for something harmful that they have done) especially in the next life

It's even biblical

Holy Books > New Testament > Luke > Chapter 14
Holy Books > New Testament > Romans > Chapter 12
Holy Books > New Testament > 2 Thessalonians > Chapter 1
Holy Books > New Testament > Hebrews > Chapter 10
Holy Books > Old Testament > Numbers > Chapter 5
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ruth > Chapter 2
Holy Books > Old Testament > 2 Samuel > Chapter 19
Holy Books > Old Testament > Job > Chapter 34
Holy Books > Old Testament > Proverbs > Chapter 20
Holy Books > Old Testament > Isaiah > Chapter 65
Holy Books > Old Testament > Jeremiah > Chapter 16
Holy Books > Old Testament > Jeremiah > Chapter 25
Holy Books > Old Testament > Jeremiah > Chapter 50
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 7
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 9
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 11
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 16
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 17
Holy Books > Old Testament > Ezekiel > Chapter 23
Holy Books > Old Testament > Hosea > Chapter 12
Holy Books > Old Testament > Joel > Chapter 3

Every person past the age of three, understands that when you "do wrong", you deserve punishment, and when you are wronged, you are OWED compensation.

Minimally, that compensation may be a kiss on your boo-boo, some wiped tears, a toy returned, a heart-felt apology, or just a hug, but you ARE owed something, and it often starts with an explanation and an acknowledgement from the person who did the harm.

The act of admission validates the wronged person. It says that you are important enough to apologize to, and that they admit fault.

It cannot be done through a third party.

What we have going on now is extreme anger AT the "people" who wronged us all, as well as anger at the "third party) ..our government is the third party who is trying desperately to "make it all better", but by the removal of the injuring parties, they may be making it worse..not better.

The appearance of them "getting off scot-free", and leaving us all injured is as painful as the original "injury", because it tells us all that we are not worthy of true recompense.

We will never be made whole again, and we know it...and we have to see and read about the ones who did this to us all, and how they accept little or none of the blame.

Throughout history, people have walked away from their wrongdoings, and the bitterness remains just under the surface..waiting to erupt at a later date..and it always does bubble up.

Our justice system is based on the fact that wrongdoing must be addressed. Without it, we have chaos. Wrongs MUST be addressed. If our government decides that only "some" people have to "pay" for their injustices, the whole system breaks down.

Any parent of more than one child, knows just how important it is to "know who did it". If the guilty one gets no punishment, there is no reason to believe that it won't happen again., If both/all are punished because the guilty one will not speak up, the innocent ones have been mistreated.

Right now there are MILLIONS of "injured parties" who have lost their retirement, their health care, their homes, their cars, their jobs, and those millions of people are waiting for some recompense..some retribution...

We understand that they blew the money, but some perp-walks , followed by some show-trials, would go a long way toward making us a little bit whole again. It's not really schadenfreude we are after, but until we see some suffering visited upon the scoundrels, we may just continue to hold onto our money a little too tightly to "do oour opart" in an economic recovery.
