Eye for an eye:
Iranian man sentenced to be blinded for acid attack

From the Guardian

A man who blinded a woman in an acid attack after she spurned his marriage proposals has been sentenced to the same punishment, in a literal application of Iran's sharia eye-for-an-eye laws.

In a highly unusual judgment, Tehran province criminal court ordered Majid Movahedi, 27, to be blinded in both eyes from drops of acid in response to a plea from his victim, Ameneh Bahrami.

The punishment is legal under the sharia code of qisas, which allows retribution for violent crimes. The court also ordered Movahedi to pay compensation to the victim.

2. It's not DU's fault.
These ads are generated by key words in any given post. I agree with you, though, that this time around it is in poor taste. If I were to post something about death by electric chair the ad would probably be from Edison Electric.

3. No, I mean it's on the Guardian website, not DU...
... just under the ad: "Find Iran Sesy (sic) Girls at Great Prices. www.Pronto.com ", which is just a few column inches away from the woman's horribly disfigured face.

Democratic Underground is blameless in this.

4. I just saw it.
I suppose it's Google Ads. Both of those ads are terrible.

5. Then it's possible that the Guardian is not aware of this.
Perhaps they'd like to know.

6. I read an update on this story last week:
Whoever is in charge there decided that the perpetrator will be blinded in only one eye. The reasoning? She has very limited vision in the one eye, and her value as a human is less than a man's.

The story went on to say that if she can come up with the money to equalize their difference in value, he can still be blinded in both eyes.

Some strange laws over there.
