19. Here ya go, and the context is quite revealing

OP snippets can be misleading to those who do not understand the full context. (translation mine)

-----------------------------

"Then the government of Obama yesterday has said that Venezuela, and myself, (using my) first and last name, do not collaborate with the fight against the narco traffic, that Venezuela has become one of the countries that most aids the narco traffic.

"Well, one of the countries that most aids the narco traffic, or, better said, correcting, the country where narco trafficking is most aided on this planet is the country that (Obama) governs, or, I think he governs it, I have my doubts that Obama governs it, but it's the United States that most aids the narco traffic on this planet.

"The United States is the biggest consumer in the world of drugs. How is it that they cannot stop the entry of drugs into their own territory?

"What is this, such cynicism. Obama, take charge of your own (affairs) and I will take charge of mine here, compadre. Do not mess with me Mr. Obama.

(Chavez then quotes a verse from the famous Venezuelan author Romulo about a thorny plant that grows on the savannas, a plant that flowers, gives off a sweet scent, but digs its thorns on those who shake it. Chavez is comparing Venezuela to the plant, i.e., don't shake it.)

"Do not mess with Venezuela, Obama. Do not make an error, do not follow the same clumsy and stupid road of the previous government of the United States. Demonstrate a bit of intelligence, Obama, and (your) secretary of state. Do not continue on the road of stupidity. Show your face to the world, recognize, see that this world has begun to change, that Venezuela has changed forever.

"They are not going to reduce or intimidate or anything ... we have dealt the narco traffic blows that had never before been seen here, in different forms.

"The DEA, here (in Venezuela), aided the narco traffic, the DEA here aided 'el golpismo' (coups).

"The day before yesterday they published and read the report on human rights. They also ranted against Venezuela.

"How strange that Obama has not learned about the violation of human rights in his own country, the Patriot Law, what is it? Persecutions, the death penalty, executions, torture.

"Is Obama not aware of Guantanamo, is Obama not aware of the merciless bombings of innocent people in Iraq, where his country, his soldiers keep killing children, innocent families?

"Has Obama not been aware of Israel and its genocidal aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip?

"Because in the (human rights) report they no not mention Israel. They do not mention the government of the United States, but Venezuela, yes. To them it remains the country that violates human rights.

"Go wash that palto++, Mr. Obama. Go wash that palto. Those of you who want can translate it into 'criollo' (Venezuelan colloquial).

"I have nothing else to say. Do not say later that it was I who first started throwing rocks, no, I am here and I will defend with my life the dignity of my country, the dignity of my people.

"That Venezuela be respected, Venezuela respects itself ...

"For a nation with respect, there will never again be an empire that will disrespect us.

-------------------------------------------

Venezuelan Colloquial Spanish

** Palto Chaqueta de vestir, parte de arriba de un traje, saco de vestir

Palto: dress jacket, top part of a suit, overcoat

Trying to find out from Venezuelan friend in Florida what the "criollo" meaning is. In Argentina and Chile, a palto is an avocado tree.

26. There's just nothing like THE TRUTH to show what kind of scum we're dealing with.
I can't begin to thank you enough for taking the time to listen to it, to then sit down and write it all out.

I was really hoping you would see this dirty treachery and add your own REAL translation.

These clowns apparently have lulled themselves into a false sense of security, imagining no one was around who would call them on this, and you can see what fools they become once they think they can't be stopped.

Thank you so much. I've known you for many years, and this is just the best post I have probably ever seen, as NO ONE has ever tried this degree of dishonesty here before now. So glad you took the time to show the DECENT posters at D.U. what the man said, after all this pathetic dreg tried to put in his mouth!

Hot damn! Beautiful! Thank you, so much.

31. I did, too, back in 2000, at the old CNN message board, when I saw the word used in a "writing"
by Cuban "exile" nazi, Carlos Alberto Montaner, and got angry, fired off a post about that writing, and was corrected by this poster in such a decent, kind way he spared me some deep, DEEP embarrassment of a kind which would have destroyed me! I made that leap to judgement myself, so I know it happens.

You can be sure the poster who provided the truthful translation knows exactly what it means. He's been throughout Latin America for decades, from one end to the other, through historic eras, and is absolutely impeccably fluent in Spanish.

32. The poster just tried to claim, in another forum, Chavez says "culo" in his speech,
meaning "asshole."

If you're interested in knowing if he's telling the truth or not, please listen to the speech, it takes only a few minutes. Note his demeanor, and the demeanor of the people in the crowd. Do any of them appear to believe he's speaking in filthy terms?

Of course not.

Read post #19, a translation by a man who has lived all over Latin America for many years, has family there, and see which translation seems to make more sense!

Go back to the video, look above the screen, see this:
CHAVEZ MANDA A LAVARSE ESE PALTO A OBAMA

"PALTO" is not "culo," which does mean "asshole." Listen carefully to the speech, you won't hear it anywhere.

Someone is trying to pull a fast one on you. I'll get the feathers!

34. One last observation on "palto"

Spoke with a Venezuelan friend tonight. To her, in everyday Venezuelan speech, "Vayase a lavar ese palto" means "Take that jacket (suit or coat) to the laundry."

It makes sense, because just before he said that, Chavez was speaking of how Venezuela is accused of violating human rights, while the United States and Israel are not.

So to my Venezuelan friend, it was a metaphor, the jacket (suit or coat) being U.S. policy of blaming Venezuela of violating human rights) calling on Obama to change that policy.

I checked a website from Spain in which someone asked what "palto" (pronounced "pal-toe") meant. A Venezuelan poster said it can also have a scatological meaning, like in army barracks language. He added that it was not necessarily insulting -- it depends on the tone in which it is said, the gesture, etc. You will notice that people laughed when Chavez asked if anyone wanted to translate it into "criollo" speech. So he said it in a joking manner.

Judi, thanks for the kind remarks in the other posts. I read the OP and was kinda alarmed at how some folks here on DU could have been hoodwinked. Good night.

41. That would make perfect sense, the Venezuelan President using ordinary Venezuelan speech,
just as your Venezuelan friend you contacted indicated.

So glad you offered the TRUTH as something we could consider, rather than that filthy attempt at a slur. As I've mentioned, the audience most clearly didn't respond as if they heard their President spouting obscenity during his serious speech. There would have been a palpable reaction, as in startled looks, double takes, some frowns had the other word, the bogus word the O.P. claimed been part of it. Absolutely.

I've seen some low stunts on message boards over the years but this one is truly low quality.

Thanks for raising the tone to where it should have been, had we known the truth to start with!

Your thoughtfulness, as you must imagine, has been unbelievably useful to the rest of us. G'night. Thanks, again.

40. If you read the REAL translation carefully made you will see he said nothing remotely like that.
Post #19, followed by a follow up post a little later after the DU'er spoke with his Venezuelan friend in Miami as a check, to get an accurate reading in their colloquial usage.

Disinformation was laid in here, and the correction was made by someone who knows EXACTLY what was said. Don't believe everything someone tells you without checking it out further yourself, if it means a national leader actually stood in public and said that.
Didn't you look at the video? Watch the audience? That alone should have been a signal to you nothing approaching a filthy insult was uttered in that speech, even if you don't speak Spanish.

The original poster claimed at DU he said "culo," (asshole) when he clearly said "palto." Someone jumped the gun, and forgot to make it look credible in case others checked up on him.
