McCain doesn't know what a "sustainable future for Las Vegas" means
It doesn't seem to hard to figure out what the study "means", but I'm not a cranky passe loser.

=====

Termite research in New Orleans, a honeybee factory in Texas, a sustainable Las Vegas: To John McCain, they're equally ridiculous.

Continuing his long-running crusade against earmarks, Sen. McCain, R-Ariz., included a $951,000 grant for sustainability research in Las Vegas in a list of federal spending in the recently passed omnibus spending bill that he found questionable.

"We are going to spend $951,500 for a sustainable Las Vegas," McCain said in a speech on the Senate floor Monday. "What does that mean? What does sustainable Las Vegas mean?"

The grant goes to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for research on a variety of topics related to the region's future prospects, according to the university.

University spokesman David Tonelli said in an e-mail that the money "will be used to support research at UNLV related to various aspects of or urban sustainability and of regional significance. This includes energy, water, health, transportation, natural resources, and land use studies that are important to achieving solutions that integrate economic, social, and environmental sustainability."

3. Why do they hate New Orleans so much?
Termite research in New Orleans,

The Formosan termite has been eating its way through the city, particularly the French Quarter, for decades before the Federal Flood. It arrived on a shipment of lumber from Asia years and years ago, when McCain't was still middle-aged.

As for the Vegas thing, might the carping perhaps have to do with the fact that that's probably Majority Leader Reid's earmark? (I read earlier that McConnell got twice as many. :eyes: )

7. Perhaps we should let Las Vegas' citizens and business...
worry about making it sustainable instead of having all of the rest of our tax dollars going to that project.

The casino's got plenty of money they should be the ones paying for that.

8. Blah....blah....blah....
The stimulus is all about spreading money around to people so they can spend it on stuff.

Right now, there really isn't anything one could consider "wasteful spending." If it puts people to work, and in this case, it probably puts dozens of researchers and statisticians to work, it is good for the economy.

:shrug:
