I lived in the South for the first 20 years of my life and I am not entirely sure that this sort of thing wouldn't pass, as long as enough black people were prevented from voting. (And we all know how good the Cons are at ensuring that.)

Not all Southerners are cracker fundy nutjobs. And those of us who fall into the fundies' hated groups would be in extremely bad shape if they ever did get their own nation. I think users on DU are referring to the groups of people who display bigoted views. Wouldn't you agree a majority of them folks are situated in the rural areas, while virtually all the Southern cities are becoming progressively moderate due to changing demographics (transplants, immigration, and passage of time). There's also the affinity towards one's region - analogous to people's allegiances to their favorite sports team, alma mater, fraternities - the need to belong to a group. Because of the history of succession, the South has an indelible identity that's unique in the entire nation.

There are those folks who hold supremacist feelings, but they mostly belong in tangential parties such as the KKK, skinheads, etc.

Its all in humor so I wouldn't take it personally.
