4. Honestly, we should just call the whole thing off.
Put it to a popular vote: any former Confederate state that still wishes to secede may do so if a majority of their population vote in the affirmative. One time good deal. Any states that fail to surpass 50% of the vote remain in the USA and agree to once and for all shut the fuck up about it already.

Except for Texas. They will be given back to Mexico.

They act like we're the ones who keep bringing it up. Uh, no.

46. (hominy) grits:
Had you lived in deep country 150 years ago, you might have had, in the yard near your kitchen, both a samp mill and an ash hopper. The samp mill was a giant mortar and pestle made from a tree stump and a block of wood. The block was suspended from a tree branch that acted as a spring. You would use this samp mill to crack dried corn and turn the kernels into coarse meal or fine flour. The ash hopper was a V-shaped wooden funnel that held wood ashes. You would run water through the ashes to make lye, which you'd then use to soften the tough outer skins (or hulls) of whole corn kernels in order to make hominy.

If the word "samp" dropped out of modern English, "hominy" hung in there and was sometimes joined by "grits." In most of America "hominy" came to mean lye hominy, or whole kernels that had been skinned but not ground. In the South, however, "hominy" came to mean skinned kernels that were then ground coarsely to make "grits." To add to the confusion, most of the South (except for Charleston SC, which holds to the old ways) calls grits "hominy grits." Yankees will do better to learn the lingo of New Orleans, where the whole kernels are still known as "big hominy" and the ground kernels as "small" or "little hominy."

I just took a long road trip through the South. (VA, NC, SC, GA ...).
This Confederate crap is all over the place. Bumper stickers saying "It's Heritage, not Hatred!". Stores full of Confederate memorabilia. And you do call it the War of Northern Aggression, not the Civil War.
The rest of the country has moved on, it's the South that is keeping this alive.

This video says it all "We won't back down." Future tense.

...What movement is afoot in Georgia right now concerning the month of April?

What day do Alabama state employees receive for vacation that is normally called MLK Day in California?

Ever check to see how many Sons of Confederate Veterans groups there are in your area?

A lot of Southerners have grown so accustomed to the ghosts of the Confederacy that they don't see them anymore. They're still there.

62. So not true.
I moved to Atlanta from the Midwest over twenty years ago and Southerners are still fighting the Civil War. It's totally incomprehensible to me. People constantly bring up their great-great-great-great Granddaddy who was Colonel Whatever. They know every relative who fought and have diaries and swords and flags. It's nauseating. People even dress up as soldiers and do re-enactments. (and don't you dare make fun of them. They're serious.) Sonny Perdue got elected with the help of the "flaggers" -- the people hell bent on having the Stars and Bars on our state flag.
Northerners bring up this shit? Hell, no. We're sick to death of hearing about their glorious obsession with the Confederacy.

72. I have daily debates with one right winger who won't give it up
He thinks of Lincoln as the most evil man in the universe, and claims the South's secession had nothing to do with slavery.

He brings it up whenever he can.

My personal experience of going to college in the South is that the Southerner is far more likely to bring it up than the "Yankee."

None of the former CSA states would vote to secede. Not one.

And they'd go on bitching about it, of course. "Ah don hafta falla no YANKEE law..."

And yeah, there isn't a Northerner I've ever known who's brought up the topic of the American Civil War and how good he/she feels about how his forebears kicked Confederate ass. It's always the Southruns, whining about what a raw deal the poor, poor slaveholders got, not getting to write the accepted history, wah wah wahhh.

(and before you Sons o' the South start complaining about my slightly cartoonish depiction, I make my home in GA and plan to stay and fight here for truth, decency and the American way for a good long time, 'k?)

I lived in the South for the first 20 years of my life and I am not entirely sure that this sort of thing wouldn't pass, as long as enough black people were prevented from voting. (And we all know how good the Cons are at ensuring that.)

Not all Southerners are cracker fundy nutjobs. And those of us who fall into the fundies' hated groups would be in extremely bad shape if they ever did get their own nation. That would include black people, all other minorities (except those individuals who kissed the a$$ of the powerbrokers), gays, any remotely independent women, and anyone who differed from the political orthodoxy.

I've done some surfing of the fundyweb. These people are absolutely batshit insane. Just zeroing in one group of abuses, I've found that Dobson's cohort actually considers elective singlehood for young women a sin.

I've heard the idea of letting fundies/neocons/etc. just break off from the U.S. and form their own country within a certain geographical area, usually in jest, I hope. It would allow them to collapse from their own putrid filth, yes, but before that happened it would be a recipe for totalitarianism and quite probably genocide.

38. I think the point was it was another flag - not the U.S. flag. The fact is, there were a number of
"Confederate Flags" and to argue about which one it might have been is kind of beside the point. It is also kind of pointless to harp about people at DU beating up on the South. The fact is, the video celebrates the Confederacy, which was a defense of slavery (yes, I know, States Rights, nevertheless most historians agree the proximate cause was slavery) so it is hard to criticize the video without stepping on some Southern toes, since the Confederacy was a Southern institution.

I get where it comes from now. What kind of screw do you have to have loose to turn a military loss into a win, use that loss to somehow proclaim your military superiority and patriotism to the country you lost to, and favor your losing flag to the winning flag to boot.

And, uhm, we're going to get in trouble for regional bigotry.

that it lost the war, we could achieve some reconciliation of some very major issues this nation faces. Instead, the stubborn clinging to a legacy of trying to preserve the enslavement of a whole race should be honored with dewy eyes and not condemned, I guess.

Jesus, people. I don't appreciate having you bigoted fucks assume I'm an ignorant redneck just because I'm from Florida. I also don't appreciate having my extended family (in Georgia and the Carolinas) painted as trailer-dwelling hicks just because of where they live. My family is middle-class to upper-middle-class. My extended family consists of bankers (my dad went into this as well), nurses, businessmen, and even an airline pilot. Hell, my grandmother went to law school about 20 years back (at the age of ~55!) and is making a decent living as a tax/estate lawyer.

None of them take that "The South will rise again" shit seriously. We'll crack jokes about "Yankees," but we'll joke about fellow Southerners as well.

42. With references to the South
I think users on DU are referring to the groups of people who display bigoted views. Wouldn't you agree a majority of them folks are situated in the rural areas, while virtually all the Southern cities are becoming progressively moderate due to changing demographics (transplants, immigration, and passage of time). There's also the affinity towards one's region - analogous to people's allegiances to their favorite sports team, alma mater, fraternities - the need to belong to a group. Because of the history of succession, the South has an indelible identity that's unique in the entire nation.

There are those folks who hold supremacist feelings, but they mostly belong in tangential parties such as the KKK, skinheads, etc.

Its all in humor so I wouldn't take it personally.

49. So why are you offended by the posting of this video?
Unless your anger is directed to some specific replies to this thread, I don't see a reason for you to take offense to the fact that some of your fellow southerners decided to put a video up on YouTube, and that the OP finds it funny for its sheer absurdity.

48. This video is ridiculous
I never did understand why so many southerners are proud of having lost a war that was (mostly) due to their unwillingness to free slaves. Of course, I assume that the majority of the people who share the same misplaced pride as this video are among the 29% who still think Bush is doing a great job...

51. Odd thing about that collage
Only one picture that I counted showed who all them brave fightin' men were attacking: U.S. troops under Old Glory. And I don't know about that "hate vs. heritage" argument; my great, great, great grandfather fought on the side of the Union, so I guess it's my family heritage is to shoot any rebel sumbitch flying that traitorous flag with the crooked cross. Not that I hate anybody, you understand, I just want to honor my family history.

52. Our town flies the U.S., State, and Confederate flags in front of city hall.
But the Confederate flag they fly is the "Stars and Bars", AKA "The First Official Flag of the Confederacy".

Although less well known than the "Confederate Battle Flags",the Stars and Bars was used as the official flag of the Confederacy from March 1861 to May of 1863. The pattern and colors of this flag did not distinguish it sharply fom the Stars and Stripes of the Union. Consequently, considerable confusion was caused on the battlefield.

The seven stars represent the original Confederate States; South Carolina (December 20, 1860), Mississippi(January 9, 1861), Florida (January 10,1861), Alabama (January 11, 1861), Georgia (January 19, 1861), Louisiana (January 26, 1861), and Texas (February 1, 1861).

I would bet you that most of our citizens don't know what it is.

70. I'm sure you're right about that
I also wonder how many would be surprized to see the number of people with Confed Battle Flag license plates driving around the Pittsburgh PA area. Asshole jackasses are not exclusive to the "southern" states!

54. And where are the happy slaves in the cotton fields?
This is sure lame. Boring paintings. Geez, you'd think with all the Civil War re-enactments the person who did this would do some real footage and not a slide show. Of course, all the women-folk are at home sewing away while other women were spies behind enemy lines, but we can't see that now can we. Speaking of Mexico (post 4)very many confederates moved there after the war and it wasn't that long ago that I saw a news article about the reunion of familes there and the ones left behind.

73. They've been backing down for 147 years
Not only don't they have slavery, the Jim Crow laws are gone too. School desegragation and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, all went by without their seceding again. Blacks can vote and hold office and do whatever citizens may of right do.
