The government surplus food dist. plan is alive and well
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 11:18 AM by shraby
The income requirements and other information is all at this government site. Apparently even food stamp recipients can be eligible. I'm re-posting this for the daytime crowd. Please try to keep kicked because for many this is vital information and may keep someone you know from going hungry.

<http://www.fns.usda.gov/fdd/programs/csfp/csfp_eligibility.htm>

The full list of states participating is in the faq section on this page:
<http://www.fns.usda.gov/fdd/programs/csfp/csfp_faqs.htm#4>

Edited to add: Why couldn't some of this surplus food be sent to the struggling food banks? In the Reagan years when things were so bad for people, the t.v. cameras were allowed into the storehouses and the amount of food in them was astronomical.

1. Here's who you have to thank ...
she really pushed and kept this going against producers and govt. officials who kept saying, "but you'll hurt the market." She pointed out that starving people are not in "the market, they're starving." She went berserk over dumped milk, etc.

6. Wow, I wonder what her reaction was to the mass pig slaughter.
because it cost more to raise one than the farmer could get by selling it. They were told to kill them so they would not flood the market and bring the price down even further.

9. Good call - actually THAT act is what triggered it.
I know it's mentioned in the book Eleanor and Franklin.
