GOPer: We Can't Investigate Bush Because of the Bad Economy
By Elana Schor - February 18, 2009, 3:40PM

The AP finally takes a look today at our January Sleeper Bill of the Month, the congressional proposal for an independent commission that would investigate civil-liberties and human-rights abuses permitted during the Bush years.

Shocking as it is, Republicans tell the AP that a post-Bush "truth commission" is a terrible concept. But you've got to applaud the sheer chutzpah of Sen. John Cornyn's (R-TX) response:

This is not only a bad idea, it is a diversion from the economic crisis we face.

I can't wait until the economic recession becomes a reason not to debate union organizing rules and pass health care reform. :)

2. Box Turtle Boi,
You need to resign your U.S. Senate commission immediately and demand GoodHair to appoint a DEMOCRAT in your position, if you don't want to do it the hard way.

Sincerely,
Hawkeye-X

5. Well, John, since you and Kay and Gov. Perry obviously won't be accepting
any of the stimulus money you so disapprove of, why don't we use that to set up a truth commission? Hmmm?

9. Hey Cornyn
What's up with you taking "fact finding junkets" in the Caribbean? You know, the ones financed by the Houston Ponzi schemer who is now under indictment.

Time to STFU, just ask Tom Delay.

13. Can't investigate Bu$h because Cornyn will go down like the Titanic.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 07:00 PM by DemoTex
Remember "Funeralgate" in Texas? Cornyn was governor Bu$h's attorney general in Texas at the time, and Cornyn helped cover-up "Funeralgate" so that the Bu$hboy could run for president in 2000. That's just the tip of the iceberg (to continue that Titanic metaphor).

18. And if the economy was good, we shouldn't investigate
Because after all, nobody should be complaining about a robust economy!

So see, heads the Republicans win and tails the GOP wins. It's really quite simple, and when you're looking for simple, look no further than Sen. Cornyn.

Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 07:22 PM by tblue37
it is one of the reasons they need to be investigated.

Repub chutzpah reminds me of the old chestnut about man who murdered his parents and then begged the court for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan.

23. Investigating one of the CAUSES of this economic crisis is a diversion? WTF?

So, why wouldn't you investigate WHY we spent so much more money (aka the Iraq money pit both in terms of raw cash, subsidies to corruptly aligned companies like Haliburton and Blackwater (NO, I'm not going to call them "Xe"!), or the huge amounts on the war itself?

Uh Cornyn, we SHOULD investigate the causes of this economic crisis (which is SO much what the last president was doing in more ways than just the Iraq war, and shut DOWN those involved in causing it and any possibility that someone else will do the same thing again and make things worse!

Can you imagine where we'd be if we allowed Bushco to privatize social security earlier? We'd all be dead meat now!

28. I don't think he even needed to say this. Bush was never going to be investigated
Not by Obama, not by Pelosi, not by Reid. If it helps to attack a slimeball GOPer, okay, whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that very soon, we need to admit the truth. We let a war criminal go free. Either we live in a society where power flows from the people and we let this happen or, alternatively, we need to grow up and deal with the fact that we don't live in a society where power flows from the people, and we were helpless to act.

In the latter case... what kind of a society do we live in, then, where the people are helpless to act?

I disagree (post #4). "until it is getting so obvious that everyone will be able to figure this out."

When you have 27% of the people thinking that Bushco was "OK" and 47% of the electorate voting for McLAME, you're NEVER gonna' get them all to figure it out!
