Vatican says sexes sin differently; women are prideful, men horny

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7897034.stm

Two sexes 'sin in different ways'

Women are prouder than men, but men are more lustful, according to a Vatican report which states that the two sexes sin differently.

A Catholic survey found that the most common sin for women was pride, while for men, the urge for food was only surpassed by the urge for sex.

The report was based on a study of confessions carried out by Fr Roberto Busa, a 95-year-old Jesuit scholar.

The Pope's personal theologian backed up the report in the Vatican newspaper.

"Men and women sin in different ways," Msgr Wojciech Giertych, theologian to the papal household, wrote in L'Osservatore Romano.

"When you look at vices from the point of view of the difficulties they create you find that men experiment in a different way from women."

Msgr Giertych said the most difficult sin for men to face was lust, followed by gluttony, sloth, anger, pride, envy and greed.

For women, the most dangerous sins were pride, envy, anger, lust, and sloth, he added.

27. Especially when you're so young, and know they're going to toss you
into that black box.

Actually, I think you're on to something important here: I think in general women have been socialized, especially in the RCC, to please. To do as they're told. I think these "sins" they've been confessing may be simply what they think they're supposed to confess.

And the men, feeling much less pressure, confess to lust and such - it makes them feel macho - and after all, those things are understandable, right? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

41. ever experience the hell that is "open confession"???
to make it worse, all the priests were friends of my parents. They used to come over to the house and play poker, drink whiskey and smoke cigars. Open confession was a no-go for me.

I also remember the shock I felt when Fr. O'Keefe yanked Gina Baily out of the confession box in front of everyone and tore her a new one. Never did find out what her "offense" was, but she was a damn, sassy kid.

Here's to you Gina, wherever you are.

I would have entirely to much fun with that:

"For Give me Father, for i have sinned"

"Yes My son?"

" Two days ago i arranged my G.I. Joe and Star wars action figures into various lewd and compromising positions and i super glued them to the coffee table."

"Excuse me?"

"Yeah, Destro has no shame and Princess Lia is quite the tart."

70. oh god...yes...and I didn't even know it existed
I am not a regular churchgoer so I wasn't up on this innovation. I wasn't home either; I was visiting my mother. And then I wasn't even in my own former parish church; they have amalgamated a number of parishes in my town to spread more thinly the priests they have left, so I just went to the one that had the most convenient hours for confession. Then I got in there saw the priest and a chair facing him, and... Well I figured it out quickly enough, did not run away, kept a poker face and my composure until I opened my mouth to say the Act of Contrition and realized that I could not remember it! I think it would have been a lot easier to get past that in a dark box...in fact in a familiar setting I might well have remembered it. The good part is that I had never seen that priest before and would not recognize him if I did so again.

80. Thankfully I left the RCC long before that...
...though I did have an "accidental" open comfession with Fr. Virgilio once. I had just told him my lastest lie about my "sin", had received my penance, and was standing up, getting ready to leave the library (the temporary confessional that had been set up) when he pulled aside the sheet that had separated us and asked if I was the last kid. I was absolutely mortified he had seen it was me he had been talking to! :D

81. Oh yeah!
I would be so nervous in the confessional that I would just stammer & stutter. I got a couple of Hail Marys & that was that. I decided it was pretty much a waste of time.

I haven't been to confession since 1984, so if I ever go back, I'll tell the priest to get a cold drink, smoke 'em if you got 'em, because we'll be here for a while!

And what if you do something the Catholic Church considers a sin, but you're not sorry for doing it? I'm not sorry for practicing birth control or having sex before marriage. Then what?

82. I could never remember doing anything wrong!
Or anything I thought was wrong. So one of the lies I confessed to would be the one I was in the process of delivering! He did not ask "to whom". Yes, and fighting with my brother, even if he had been at camp for weeks. Well I might have confessed to "taking the name of the Lord in vain" because I said "Oh God" or something. Yes those were my three. It seemed to be about the right number. Credible like.

to counsel people about marriage - having never experienced it themselves.

It's nutty. The day the old boys get over their serious hang-ups and break out of the he-man-women-haters club mentality, is the day the RCC breaks free of its bigotry and prejudice and becomes a healthy church.

39. My best friend growing up was Catholic
and when she got married she went through pre-Cana. It was required. I asked her how being counseled by someone who had never been married made sense... she justified it by saying 'priests have relationships'... she didn't mean it in a sexual way.

A lapsed Catholic I knew wanted to get married in the Catholic Church. The priest insisted on doing a counseling session with each of them separately. The priest asked the woman how many men she'd had sex with and he asked the man how often he masturbated. Horny old guy.

63. When I was getting married, since we were being married
by both a Catholic priest and a rabbi, we had to do the silly pre-cana thing, too. We looked for and found one that was just one morning. It was so incredibly useless. The funniest part was the slide show on contraception. Idiots. And my poor husband, having to sit through that nonsense on my behalf.

We actually had better counsel from the rabbi and from the priest who was marrying us. Though a young guy, without first-hand experience, he knew to ask us to think about good questions: how we'd deal with X, or Y or Z. We really could have skipped the other silliness entirely.

51. I'm a horny woman. Does that mean I'm both special and sinful.

I'm sorry. Lust is so much more fun than pride. Unless we're talking gay pride here.

55. Have they trotted out the whole
"if it weren't for women tempting men, men wouldn't be lustful" crapola yet?

Even when men are "guilty of sin" it's all the "evil wimmen's" fault.

59. What is said in the confessional stays in the confessional
or so I was led to believe.

Now the Church is conducting a census (or is it sinsus) on the most popular sins. Seems hypocritical.

65. Women don't get the gluttony sin?
WTF? What about all the penitence diets, like weight watchers? If we don't feel sinful, why are we evidently always and forever trying to lose weight?

So confession is used as a public survey now?
