Octuplet birth might spawn new laws

The birth of octuplets to a Whittier woman could spur the creation of new state laws regulating in vitro fertilization.

State Sen. Sam Aanestad, R-Grass Valley, is considering introducing legislation that would prohibit the state from paying medical bills for multiples born using IVF and would regulate fertility procedures themselves to prevent multiple births.

"He's got a very big concern about the cost to taxpayers," said Aanestad spokesman Bill Bird. The birth of Nadya Suleman's octuplets on Jan. 26 sparked controversy after it was revealed that she already had six children under age the age of 7 and was supporting her family with student loans, disability payments and food stamps. Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center representatives have declined to speak about the family's insurance, but bills could total over $1 million. Hundreds of thousands of dollars could be billed to the state if the children qualify for Medi-Cal.

Suleman identified the clinic where she said she conceived her family of 14 as West Coast IVF Clinic in Beverly Hills. Dr. Michael Kamrava heads that clinic but has declined to comment about the birth of the eight babies - the only surviving octuplets in history. The California Medical Board is investigating the doctor who performed the treatment, although representatives of the board would not say if Kamrava was the physician under scrutiny.

Debbie Nelson of the state medical board
said new details might emerge in a week or so, but that full investigations can take several months to a year.

So, maybe now ALL people who use IVF will be paying an additional "price" for the irresponsibility of one person.. I wonder how many will still be "in her corner", screaming about how it was "her right"..and how it does not affect them..

also.. a new link to a UK interview..where she discussed her $500 a week Salvadoran nanny..who works 12 hour days and never asks for time off or for more money..:eyes:

1. So a Rethug is pushing for selective abortion in the case of multiples. That's odd.

5. If the state won't pay for multiples born as a result of IVF, then women who
find themselves unexpectedly pregnant with multiples are going to face an additional financial pressure that will encourage them to opt for selective reduction.

3. That would be an asinine law.
Much as I don't think it's responsible for octomom or the woman who's pregnant with quads to expect the state to pay for their health care at a time when many in this state can't get any health care assistance at all, such a law would penalize the children and for that reason it's just flat out wrong.

4. Never underestimate the capacity of lawmakers to write loopy laws
especially when the state is broke:(

6. Yep. Just don't cover their medical needs.
It's their fault they got born.

What a stupid idea. Too many people already don't have health coverage, and this clown wants to cut off even more.

7. There are more dems in the legislature, but financial pressures being what they are,
this idea might grow legs:(....so people who use this process RESPONSIBLY, may find themselves with no option.

8. While I have no respect for that woman
or her doctor, I fail to see the logic of denying health care to the babies. Are we a nation that willingly lets innocent children die or grow up severely damaged because we deny them health care????? It's bad enough we're the only first world country out there without a national health care program, so that kids can die from infected teeth and other such delights. To pass laws to prevent health care coverage to ANYONE, regardless of their personal circumstances is disgusting. I just hope that NO ONE who supports this despicable notion ever, ever has the nerve to call him or herself a Christian.

To whom would Jesus deny health care coverage?
