Columbus Weatherman is a KOOKY global warming denier
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 09:11 PM by pilsner
Contact NBC4 and urge them to send weatherman Jym Ganahl to some climate change conferences with peer-reviewed climatologists. Let NBC4 know that they have a responsibility to have expert climatologists on-air to debunk Ganahl's misinformation and the climate change deniers don't deserve an opportunity to spread their propaganda:

THE OTHER PAPER, 2/5/09

MEDIA MORSELS: Ganahl debunks the global warming

Just when you thought it was safe to assume that everyone had pretty much accepted climate change and moved on, here comes rogue NBC 4 chief meteorologist Jym Ganahl to blow your freaking mind.

"Just wait 5 or 10 years, and it will be very obvious. They'll have egg on their faces," Ganahl said this week of global warming advocates....

1. I submitted this Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,

I wonder if NBC4 weatherman Jym Ganahl believes that President Bush and the strategic planners at the Pentagon are part of the so-called climate change hoax? Here's the headline of a Fortune Magazine article that reports about climate change: "The Pentagon's Weather Nightmare: The Climate Could Change Radically, and Fast. That Would be the Mother of all National Security Issues." http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/...

President Bush said we must "confront the serious challenge of global climate change" in his 2007 State of the Union Address.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/jan-june07/bush...
Of course, the policies he supported has made the problem much worse.

Ganahl clearly has no expertise regarding climate change. He's lucky to forecast accurately three days out. NBC4 should send him to some climate change conferences with climatologists who have their work peer-reviewed. Hundreds of peer-reviewed studies show that global warming is real and human activity contributes to it. There are zero peer reviewed studies that back up Ganahl which make him a kook.

NBC4 has a responsibility to have real experts on-air to debunk Ganahl's misinformation. There should be no debate with the climate change deniers until they can back up their opinions with sound science.

State Farm will soon stop insuring property in Florida because they realize that the effects of climate change would cause bankruptcy. Maybe Ganahl and his kooky friends should pool their money to start up an insurance company in Florida to fill the void.

Nationwide Insurance has an informative web page about climate change.
http://www.nationwide.com/catastrophes/global-warming.j... Them too, Jym?

What's next, Anchorman Cabot Rea spouting off that Sadam Hussien really did have nuclear weapons?

Thanks,

8. Ganahl effectively muddled the issue with many people
A college educated co-worker who believes in global warming showed me the article and remarked that Ganahl makes a persuasive case that maybe global warming might just be hot air. My jaw about hit the floor.

3. 1709: The year that Europe froze .
People across Europe awoke on 6 January 1709 to find the temperature had plummeted. A three-week freeze was followed by a brief thaw - and then the mercury plunged again and stayed there. From Scandinavia in the north to Italy in the south, and from Czechoslovakia in the east to the west coast of France, everything turned to ice. The sea froze. Lakes and rivers froze, and the soil froze to a depth of a metre or more. Livestock died from cold in their barns, chicken's combs froze and fell off, trees exploded and travellers froze to death on the roads. It was the coldest winter in 500 years.

4. In 5 or 10 years, Ganahl will have egg on his face
And we'll all have the video of him making that "prediction".

Maybe Michael Moore will include it in a future film about corporate propaganda.

7. Yes, I had a meteorologist friend who was a GW denier
But that was over 10 years ago. I think he's convinced now.

I can tell you, the meteorologists who do the weather for the Northwest Territories, the Yukon and Nunavut aren't deniers. They see MAJOR changes almost every season.

9. Ganahl is overdue to retire
I think Ganahl spouted off now because he has 30 years at the station and knows that his time is about up. I'm sure he draws a big salary and the station has a new G.M.

I bet his kooky right wing friends are hoping he'll get fired and they'll get even more attention from the media. Cons love to play the victim and pretend they don't have free speech.

Ganahl has every right to his opinions. But NBC4 has a responsiblity to counter his comments that are based on junk science.

10. It ain't just Columbus that houses wack-job meteorologists.
There was an article in the right wing Plain Dealer up here in Cleveburg interviewing five local meteorologists all saying the same damned thing: that climate change is a matter of cycle or some shit. Their resident dickspank Kevin O'Brien writes an almost yearly article directed to Al Gore for him to shovel the two feet of snow out of his driveway everytime Cleveland has a bad winter.

Luckily, weathermen aren't climatologists, and neither is Bucky O'Brien.

It's almost like this paper goes out of their way to advocate a pro-corporate, pro-right bent. 2008 must've made them collectively mad.

11. Another reason to
be cautious about meteorologists talking about Global Warming/Catastrophic Climate Change.

From Hell and High Water by Joe Romm (Recommended reading).

Another reason the media gets the climate extreme-weather link wrong: Most meteorologists, including virtually every TV meteorologist, are not experts on global warming. As on climate scientist explained to me:

"Meteorologits are not required to take a course in climate change ... university programs don't requre the course (even if they offer it). So we have been educating generations of meteorologists who know nothing about climate change."

Asking a meteorologist to explain the cause of recent extreme weather is like asking your family doctor what the chances are for an avian flu pandemic in the next few years or asking a Midwest sheriff about the prospects of nuclear terrorism. The answer might be interesting, but it wouldn't be one I'd stake my family's life on. (p. 225)
Yet, meteorologists are the easiest for journalists to get ahold of and they sound so authoritative. But, just like Romm, I don't want to stake my (or your) family's life on their views.

12. Could Exxon & Chevron be paying off weathermen
to spout off that climate change is a hoax?

I have no proof but it would be money well spent (in an evil way).

I have heard that there are quite a few TV weather guys around the country who say it's a hoax.

13. Ganahl is back on drugs?
the man has been a whack job for years.

He became addicted to pain killers and asked the
station's on air Dr. to write him a 'script to help w/
his headaches but did not tell the Dr. that he was getting
the same drugs from 3 other Drs. ... when the caught him
w/ the drugs he "sold out" his friend, the Dr., and testified
against him.
