Report: priest sued for assault continues to drive police-style car

(Bloomfield-AP) _ A priest sued by several men over molestation allegations is continuing to drive a police-style car like the one he is accused of using as a trap for young teenage boys, according to a published report.

The Hartford Courant reports that the priest, Stephen Foley, a former fire and police chaplain, now has a black Ford Crown Victoria with emergency lights in the grill and windows as well as scanners and antennas. The newspaper reports that he parks the car at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, where he lives.

Foley was stripped of many of his duties as a priest in 2002, when the first lawsuits were filed. He was installed at the seminary in 1993 after the archdiocese removed him from his Glastonbury parish amid an abuse complaint.

One of his accusers says Foley would give boys rides in his police car, then offer them alcohol and molest them.

The archdiocese has paid millions of dollars to the accusers, and Foley is no longer associated with any police or fire agencies. He was never charged criminally because the allegations stem from the mid-1970s and the statute of limitations had expired. A spokesman for the diocese says church officials are looking into the car issue, and state Representative Michael Lawlor says a criminal investigation into how Foley obtained the car may be warranted.
