WTF? Every time I make an error on my taxes - the IRS sends
me nasty letters. If I wait too long to contact them they threaten to garnish my wages. I admit there have been years that I just couldn't pay them all and I was late.

Never has it been more than a couple of thousand.

Reading all the stories lately, it's an epidemic among rich people. Obama is having a hard time find anyone who does pay all their taxes. How do they get away with it?

On top of that my brother-in-law owed over 80,000 in back taxes for over 5 years and he hired a guy to negotiate that amount down by half! I just don't freakin get it.

Sorry...just needed to vent.

4. Not exactly...
Something unreported that raises a flag just generates a letter with a new taxes due amount. I would know. I forgot to include my s-corp earnings once

8. But if someone else is just writing the car as a biz expense, it's not clear who is on the ...
receiving end if they/Daschle doesn't report it.

3. Don't forget they will take your tax returns if you aren't payed
up.

They will go after the little man because we are an easy target.

5. we made an error on ours and it took the federal 3 years to catch it. Took the state 4 years
In our case, my wife received an inheritance from her father in the form of insurance, pension, savings, and various stocks. So much paperwork was flying around something was left out of the stack of papers when we got taxes done.

I'm not saying Daschle didn't know he'd evaded taxes. I am saying it's easy to evade taxes by accident (and on purpose) and have it go unnoticed for years.

How do rich people get away with it? I read once that the IRS audits the poor and middle class in much higher rates than the wealthy.

6. I've also read that high-profile
activists get audited regularly. We were found to owe back taxes and worked out a payment plant pronto. There was zero choice in the matter.

7. Now take all that, add a few 0's on the end, and throw in accountants.
And there you have it.
