WASHINGTON – The Senate voted Tuesday to give a tax break to new car buyers, setting aside bipartisan concerns over the size of an economic stimulus bill with a price tag approaching $900 billion.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski led the successful effort to allow many car buyers to claim an income tax deduction for sales taxes paid on new autos and interest payments on car loans.

She said the plan would aid the beleaguered automobile industry as well as create jobs at a time the economy is losing them at a rapid rate. "I believe we can help by getting the consumer into the showroom," she said.

My bonus was cancelled, as was a year cost-of-living increase in my salary. Everything else has gone up, but I effectively make less now than a year ago.

My car will be paid off this year. Am I going to run out and buy a new one? Doubtful, given the crappy economy.

While the tax break might be nice, many of us NEED THE MONEY UP FRONT in order to purchase a new vehicle. Oh, and a stable job to be able to keep making the payments, plus the increase on the car insurance for a new car.

it's not a bad idea to try and help the beleaguered auto industry. Based on the lack of people on the car lots I drive by every day, there are going to be a lot more layoffs coming.

Attempting to use the Tax System when people do not even have jobs
only blows one's mind. Those people who do have jobs are hanging
on and not spending one penny they can save.

It is kinda like GOP giving Taxcuts to people who do not have jobs
