Rush Limbaugh...5 homes in Palm Beach, 6 cars about half a million each.
Must be profitable being him. Interesting.

From an article in the New York Times, June of last year.

Late period Limbaugh

ANTICIPATING A QUESTION, Limbaugh said when we pulled into the garage of his secluded beachfront mansion in Palm Beach, why do I have so many cars?

I hadnt actually been wondering that. Very rich people tend not to stint on transportation. For example, we drove to the house from the studio, Limbaugh at the wheel, in a black Maybach 57S, which runs around $450,000 fully loaded. He had half a dozen similar rides on his estate.

I have these cars for two reasons, Limbaugh said. First, they are for the use of my guests. And two, I happen to love fine automobiles.

He also loves space. There are five homes all of them his on the property. The big house is 24,000 square feet. Limbaugh lives there with a cat. Hes been married three times but has no children.

Limbaugh informed me that I was the first journalist ever to enter his home. Mary Matalin, the Republican consultant, calls the place aspirational, which is one adjective that fits. The place, largely designed by Limbaugh himself, reflects the things and places he has seen and admired. The massive chandelier in the dining room, for example, is a replica of the one that hung in the lobby of the Plaza Hotel in New York. The gleaming cherry-wood floors are dotted with hand-woven oriental carpets. A life-size oil portrait of El Rushbo, as he often calls himself on the air, hangs on the wall of the main staircase.

I was concerned about Mary Matalin overhearing conversations by her hubby and his buddies which included the new Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel.

Here is one reason, among many others...her proximity to Rush Limbaugh.

EVERY APRIL, LIMBAUGH HOSTS A WEEKEND at his Palm Beach estate for his closest friends. This year the guest list included Roger Ailes, Mary Matalin and Joel Surnow, a creator of the television series 24 and a leader of the small Hollywood conservative community. The event is social but hardly nonpolitical.

Anyone looking for an informal gathering of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy could do worse than this. Limbaugh is also close to Karl Rove, who dined with him a few weeks earlier in Florida; Justice Antonin Scalia (last year he attended a dinner at cousin Steve Limbaughs Cape Girardeau home); and Justice Clarence Thomas (who officiated at Limbaughs third wedding). He describes his fellow Floridian Matt Drudge as a buddy. George H. W. Bush invited Limbaugh to sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom.

It's as though all Limbaugh's drug problems are long forgotten.

He appears to be back in fine form with his power to make Republican congressman be careful what they say....and apologize if they say the wrong thing. So in case you start thinking that the right wing folks are not as supportive of Limbaugh after 8 long years of the failure of the policies he espouses.....well, remember Gingrey.

Gingrey grovels

But when the congressman for Georgias 11th district sounded off this week about Rush Limbaugh - saying it was easy for him to stand back and throw bricks while elected officials provide leadership - Gingrey had little inkling of the uproar his remarks would create.

Within hours of criticizing the popular right-wing talker, the GOP lawmakers offices were bombarded with phone calls and e-mails from outraged constituents and Limbaugh devotees known as dittoheads. By the next morning, a humbled Gingrey was phoning in to Limbaughs show to apologize.

I just wanted to tell you, Rush - and all our conservative giants, who help us so much to maintain our base and grow it to get back this majority - that I regret those stupid comments, he said.

Gingreys grovelling mea culpa is being heralded as evidence to support two emerging views of the conservative movement in post-George W. Bush era - that theres a Republican leadership vacuum in Washington, and that Limbaugh, the great tormentor of liberals everywhere, is stepping in once again to fill the void.

In my mind the worst thing he has ever done is to excuse and glorify torture. Media Matters covered his remarks.

Limbaugh on Abu Ghraib

As reported by Wonkette.com, Limbaugh's comments can be found on his website. From the May 4 Rush Limbaugh Show, titled "It's Not About Us; This Is War!":

CALLER: It was like a college fraternity prank that stacked up naked men --

LIMBAUGH: Exactly. Exactly my point! This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?

The day before, on his May 3 show, Limbaugh observed that the American troops who mistreated Iraqi prisoners of war were "babes" and that the pictures of the alleged abuse were no worse than "anything you'd see Madonna, or Britney Spears do on stage."

LIMBAUGH: And these American prisoners of war -- have you people noticed who the torturers are? Women! The babes! The babes are meting out the torture.

In 2000 during the recount a relative called us from another state...he started out with these words: "Can't you idiots in Florida get it right?"

I later learned that was one of the talking points used by Rush Limbaugh.

That said, fuck him. He makes a lot of money and spends it. I can't fault that. I can fault that we haven't been able to shut that down. Yet.

This vehicle will require a driver, and it will be more comfortable for this poor bastard in his declining years, no doubt.

He could have it painted a nice shiny black to make it seem more formal.

The attitude we see from Limbaugh and other corporate neocons and their allies is exactly the same type of attitude displayed by the French monarchy prior to the French Revolution. These assholes should be so lucky that we have evolved over the last two hundred years; and unlike them, most of us abhor the death penalty.

86. Per Top Gear:
"Quite why you would want a Maybach when the Rolls-Royce Phantom exists is beyond rational thinking."

Oh, and this bit from them:

Cool

If you live in America, the Maybach represents and displays enormous wealth (the base model is 263,125, the most expensive 345,675), which, in America, is considered very cool indeed. In the UK however, where taste and good breeding count for a great deal, people will think you are a right twat.

Top Gear's Top Tip on the Maybach 57/62:

"A Rolls-Royce Phantom lists at 265,500 stock, with the extended wheelbase version coming in at 313,500. Dont be a fool."

16. Raise your hand if you still believe Matalin should be in on Rahm's calls.
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/...

"The calls are about whats happening, what the implications are of whats happening and whats going on, said Emanuel.

Mary Matalin, who as Carvilles wife has overheard probably thousands of the groups calls, describes the conversation as more profane, more sports-centric versions of a knitting club.

They talk like they are girls, she said. The conversations start in the middle and they end in the middle, and if they talk at night, theyll start in the morning with no break in the flow....To me, the first purpose is friendship, said Matalin, and the second purpose is information-sharing.

21. Aesop's Fable Lesson - The Ass and his Purchaser
The Ass and his Purchaser

A man who wanted to buy an Ass went to market, and, coming across a likely-looking beast, arranged with the owner that he should be allowed to take him home on trial to see what he was like. When he reached home, he put him into his stable along with the other asses. The newcomer took a look round, and immediately went and chose a place next to the laziest and greediest beast in the stable. When the master saw this he put a halter on him at once, and led him off and handed him over to his owner again. The latter was a good deal surprised to seem him back so soon, and said, "Why, do you mean to say you have tested him already?" "I don't want to put him through any more tests," replied the other. "I could see what sort of beast he is from the companion he chose for himself."

20. Rush now leader of the GOP? Picture.

Some say conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh has emerged as the leader of the GOP. But will he help or hurt the struggling party?
(J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo )

From ABC:

Limbaugh, friend or foe.

n the week since President Obama took the oath of office, Limbaugh's name was dropped by the new president as someone Republicans should not listen to, spurring the radio superstar to boast that he believes Obama is "frightened" of him.

In today's Wall Street Journal, Limbaugh penned an op-ed in which he proposed his own version of the stimulus package.

And when one Republican congressman spoke out against Limbaugh effectively calling him a hindrance to the party the talk show host booked the congressman on his syndicated radio show, allowing him an opportunity to grovel and ask for forgiveness.

Oh, and a don't miss video with Barbara Walters:

Lovable Rush Limbaugh

It's great and telling.

40. I don't get this. EMERGED?
Rush Limbaugh has been pulling the GOP's strings for a long time. The Contract on America Congress lauded him in special session as the "majority maker."

He won't take the job of RNC Chairman because he couldn't laugh off his seditious talk as "entertainment" anymore, and the job pays a fraction of what his radio gig brings in. Last I checked the RNC Chairman doesn't even have ONE half-million-dollar car, much less six of them. Believe me though, Limbaugh is completely in charge over there.

and along with the talk radio monopoly they make them acceptable and easier to use by the rest of the media. he is the most powerful single political voice last 20 years but i would disagree that he is in charge of anything.

they have to stroke his ego to maintain his certitude because thats what his base needs from him, thats what sells, but he is ignorant on so many levels and his main function has always been to spin material that is fed to him by guys like rove and crew and think tanks etc. he always gets first dibbs to break material so he can say see i told you so and he's a brilliant story teller and rationalizer and denial enabler but his bluster only succeeds because he's sitting behind a microphone with a call screener in front of him making sure he never gets real calls ( maybe once in a while one sneaks through).

and i wish progressives would get obama's back there by calling regularly - some are easier to get through than others but once i figure out the screener won't let me on i can always say something to the screener or management and thank them for the bush, the occupation, the economy and all the other shit they played such an important part in selling, with their coordinate uncontested repetition.

..until I happened to read a reference to him long ago by a newspaper comics artist named Bil Keane in one of his "Family Circus" comic strips, which went a long way in explaining why the strip was so uhh... just plain "Pleasantville" boring. Since Keane had never before referred to a RW person in his strip, I looked up Limbaugh to find out who he was...ughh!!

49. They believe they'll all be millionaires
when the "coloreds" are back in the fields picking cotton. The party of ignorant bigots has been playing the race card since Strom Thurmond formed the Dixiecrats who later became the core of the Republican party. The last remnants of the Confederacy are still breathing. They've appealed to the worst fears and lowest instincts to keep the frightened and uneducated under their control.
I've just taken to calling them bigots and watch them try to change the subject.

Five houses ? Wonder who lives in them all ? Probably has a collection of boytoys in at least one of them. Somehow I also can't connect him getting his regular supply of oxyconyin from a couple of amatuers with all this display of so called wealth. You'd think he would have a full fledged medical doctor delivering his drugs in a stretch limo. Whoever wrote this article should be a little more descriptive about the houses, the other four are probably trailers, that's the only place his usual guests would feel at home.

This is my conclusion after reading the entire NYT article. The guy's a showboat. As Olbermann says, a comic. The very fact that, by no less than Rove's own admission, Limbaugh has shaped GOP policy, certainly does not make him a serious contender in the political arena. I mean, look at the GOP! Cartoons.

I'm not going to participate in giving him any more power by giving him undue attention. The more the Left rants against him, the bigger his spotlight.

This guy is not a threat. Unless you happen to have a radio program during the same time slot.

115. Taxes???
I am just so sure he has paid ALL of the legitimate taxes owed on his assets. Yeah. Right. And I'm a right wing evangelist. If you believe that, snort some more peanut butter. He is just another greedy, kinky, GOP hypocrite, with a majorly big mouth, that doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself. He is an anti-American pig.

122. Obviously Rush uses his audience to keep him comfy....
If he was a elected official he would of been arrested. (Blago)

Instead he uses the demonizing of liberal and progressive ideas to further his own ambition and wealth.

I am sure the media would do well to hound Limbaugh and expose his over the top consumption. I am sure America's "dittoheads" would love to see what thier support has got them.

Rush the fat cat, house cat with no skills other than pointed muck raking and the ditohead. Laid off, broke and soon to be homeless.

124. this is the email I sent to limbaugh's advertisers....
I remember and perhaps you do too, a number of years ago, (at least fifteen) Dennys restaurants suffered a scandal when one of their outlets failed to serve an African American would-be customer. For years they have been trying to live that down. I still hear people occassionally bring it up and some black people I know still boycott them. The point is, do you really think its wise to advertise with hate-mongers Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity? I cant help but associate your product with them, and that it why I can no longer buy it, and why I and others are spreading the word. Those two spent many hours of air time in the 90s inferring that the then-President Clinton and his wife were drug-runners and not just murderers but multiple murderers, (if you dont believe me, look it up) now they spend most of their time with baseless and misleading racist spew against our current President. If I were you, I would disassociate my company from these two (and others of their ilk) as soon as possible because, as I mentioned before, it can take a long time to remove the type of stain that they are leaving on your brand.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter
