Disgraced pastor Haggard facing new sex allegations
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/01/26/colorado.church/index.html

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- A megachurch paid a 20-year-old man to keep silent about a sexual relationship he had with disgraced evangelical pastor Ted Haggard, a senior church pastor said.
Rev. Ted Haggard was fired from New Life Church after allegations about a prostitute and drug use arose in 2006.

Haggard, who was fired amid allegations that he used drugs and patronized a male prostitute in 2006, had a sexual relationship with a second man -- a 20-year-old volunteer at his megachurch, the Rev. Brady Boyd, a senior pastor at the church, said Monday.

The church agreed to pay the man in exchange for his pledges not to talk publicly about the relationship, Boyd said, referring to a settlement reached by the man's lawyer and the church's insurance company. Under the settlement, the church provided the man money to pay his college tuition, moving expenses and counseling, Boyd said.

1. "Allegations"? Is he being charged with a crime or something?
If he's gay, he's gay. Maybe he (and all those fascinated with his sex life) should just accept it and move on.

Being gay isn't illegal, Ted.

5. According to the RR, being Gay is illegal
But according to us - and the penal code - it is not

Ted, my friend - come over to our side! Trust me, we'll find a church that will accept you, and you will never have to hide your true self again!

Isn't that worth it?

I mean - there is no God anyway - and if there were, do you think he would purposefully doom certain souls to hell by making them gay vis a vis their genetic code?

10. It's the hypocrisy
His church pretended to be so shocked when he was exposed and they knew about this previous relationship.
Ted should come out of the closet and get over it.

2. Poor Ted..
It was his misfortune to choose religious minsitry.. Maybe he thought it would "cure" him, or provide "cover"..no matter which, he sure chose the wrong "profession"..

Right wing religious zealotry, and marriage to woman who got a really bad deal, were the wroong way to go, for him..

Surely there was another choice he could have made, regarding his career, where he could have led the lifestyle that would have truly been HIM..

He's wasted 1/2 his life hurting people he claimed to love, and dishonored himslef in the process..

Baaaad ted... now go away..

4. Just think if he became a Psychotherapist instead of Pastor?
Or - say he still became a Pastor, but chose the Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the United Methodist Church?

13. In the United Methodist Church, he'd have exactly the same problems.
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 09:06 PM by Critters2
The official position of the United Methodist Church--and it is enforced--is that "homosexuality is incomaptible with the Christian faith" (from the Book of Discipline). The UMC will not ordain openly gay clergy, allow its clergy to officiate at same-sex weddings, or allow any same-sex weddings or unions to take place on any UMC property.

The United Methodist Church: Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors....unless you're gay.

The ELCA's position is less clear, but apparently allows bishops some freedom in allowing gay clergy in their judicatories.

If one wants to be an openly gay clergyperson, the best places to serve are the UUA, the UCC, the MCC, and some regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The UMC is one of the worst denominations for gay clergy.

17. Thanks for the correction
I haven't been keeping up...being an Atheist and all

But yeah - I know the UMC ordain gay marriages - but I thought they would have gay clergy. I guess that abomination still persists.

18. Actually, the UMC is hugely irritating to me. It presents itself as a progressive church,
but that's blatantly dishonest. Its attitudes and policies toward glbt issues are EXACTLY the same as the Southern Baptist Convention.

3. Hmm...was this before or after he got "cured"?
wouldn't it be so much easier to just accept yourself as you are and be as gay as you wanna be? I mean at this point he's going to "hell" either way.

"This was compassionate assistance. It was to help him move forward, not a settlement to keep him quiet," said Boyd, senior pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado

~I'll bet.

7. If he has a soul he will say this:
I am gay. God made me this way. There is nothing wrong with God's creations. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with being Gay.

I apologize for all of the hatred and filth I've spewed in the past - but I was confused.

Now that I understand myself, and God a little more - I know that what I am, what millions of gay men and women are, is not an abomination, but a celebration of life at the hands of the creator...

Of course he won't, but if he does - you heard it here first folks!

11. Wow... you're right...
I'm betting he is sans soul, though.

You know how the evangelicals say God put dinosaur bones in the ground to test our faith? Well, what if he made gay people to test the evangelicals to see if they are treated like the rest of God's children?

:)

Sounds better than the dumb bones story to me!

19. I wish he would just say that, but I don't think so.
Years of preaching homophobia and he probably still thinks it's bad even though he is gay or bi.

20. This man was obviously born gay and can't deal with it.
His theology makes him and his followers believe that Satan makes them do things. They cannot take responsibility for there actions so they blame Satan.

"How conveeeeeenient!"
