Gap in Justice, White House e-mails raises questions

From Kevin Bohn
CNN Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A 16-day gap in e-mail records between the Justice Department and the White House concerning the firing of U.S. attorneys last year has attracted the attention of congressional investigators.

In an investigation into whether seven U.S. attorneys were fired for political rather than professional reasons, the Justice Department on Monday handed over 3,000 pages of documents to the House and Senate Judiciary committees.

But the documents included no correspondence about the firings in the critical time period between November 15, 2006, and December 2, 2006, right before the attorneys were asked for their resignations.

On November 15 -- the last day before the e-mail gap -- Kyle Sampson, who was then chief of staff to Gonzales, e-mailed Miers and her deputy an outline of the plan to fire the prosecutors and wrote, "The plan, by its terms, would commence this week."

Documents Show Gonzales Approved Plans to Fire Several U.S. Attorneys
Friday, March 23, 2007

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting, according to newly released documents that contradict earlier claims that he was not closely involved in the dismissals.

The Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Justice Department officials said late Friday.

There, Gonzales signed off on the plan, which was crafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week amid a political firestorm surrounding the firings.

1. Somebody has a "Peaarl Harbor File." Lawyers know how to keep those.
It's one of my Top Three recommendations for survival in the Corporate World. (1) Network - never voluntarily burn bridges and keep in touch; (2) Save copies of 'smoking gun' documents and anything associated with a sneaky activity; (3) Keep a journal - spiral binder containing contemporaenous notes regarding every assignment, meeting, one-on-one, and comments made to you.

Fail to do any of these at your peril.

I'm willing to bet one of the eight or Sampson dug out this little gem from their PHF.
