"President's Therapist" Ad on DU
I don't know how many have checked out the home page ad for "The President's Therapist" but I have to say this crosses a line that it just shouldn't. Faking psychotherapy, even for Bush, and then "reporting" on it, is an egregious misuse of the idea of therapy. I despise Bush and all he stands for, but as a therapist I think DU is wrong to promote an abuse of an individual, even GW, using psychotherapy as a tool. Ugh.

1. If you have a star, you don't see ads.
Plus, it is not specifically DU that is promoting anything.

8. You're not the OP and she has no star. I have a star and see no ads.
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 04:58 PM by elocs
That's about the lay of the land as I see it. What can I tell you?

Try this: Options---Preferences----the last choice for donors only "Display Google ads?" Choose "No". Simple, no more ads.

So whatever is going on, that's one obnoxious ad.

16. It shows up on my Greatest page.
I have a star, and the only place I see ads is the Greatest page. I agree, though--that one's really annoying.

2. I have a big problem with some of those ads. Do we have to see
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 03:18 PM by higher class
Bush, Coulter Rove, Limbaugh each time we check in for the Latest? I agree. I was immediately turned off, especially the rotating flashes of text. I don't know if that's someone's idea of drawing you into the ad, but find I tense up when there is something continually flashing in the periphery. I'm changing my IP because I can't stand checking in for e-mail. On top of that - Bush and team?

9. Since you are a donor, go to "Options" and for "Display Google ads?" choose "No".
No more ads. DU does not specifically pick and choose these ads because they are from Google and help to pay the bills here. It's a sad reality of life.

flashing ones or the ones with the faces of Coulter, Rove, etc. It fills the head with unrest, nerve blasting, unpeaceful type behavior.

I support DU presenting ads. But I have some eye-nerve problems - never go near strobes - avoiding driving at night because of halogen lighting and height of all the SUV'z - you can't avoid them - the equivalent of bright lights if the angle of the road is not flat. It's punihsment.

I feel sorry for epiletics or epiletic prone. Maybe they don't even try. There are members of all ages with a variety of health issues.

Thanks.

27. It's not a Google ad.
It's a paid ad on the left column on some common-area pages, like the main discusssion page.

"The President's Analyst" with James Coburn and Godfrey Cambridge.

Very funny, considering it was over 40 years ago. Very sad how little has changed!

7. One of my favorite movies
Tell us about the genesis of The President's Analyst.
Ted Flicker I met while we were shooting Charade in Paris. He'd come over to meet with his friend Peter Stone, who'd written the picture. So Ted was sitting in the background with his big black shades, watching us shoot. So Peter introduced us...George Peppard and Elizabeth Ashley were having a Christmas party a few years later. Ted was there. He said "I've just finished a script called 'The President's Analyst.'" I said "That's an intriguing title. Do you have a deal on it?" He said "No." So I took it home, read it, and wanted to do it. Ted said he wanted to direct it, so I said "Let me talk to Paramount." I had just done Waterhole No. 3 (1967) over there. Robert Evans had just taken over, he loved it. Peter Bart read it, loved it. They said "Can he direct?" I said "I dunno, let's find out." So they put the whole deal together in five days! It was Evans' first film at Paramount. There are some great scenes in there. It was named one of the finest political films of the decade by the Sunday Times in London...Ted Flicker never did another movie. He moved out to New Mexico, did one hit TV show, the name of which escapes me, and sculpts, paints. Just finished a script about the Civil War.

17. LOVED it!
The President's Analyst is a terrific movie! But it's not the idea, it's the blurring of reality and fiction around a real person. I wouldn't want ANYONE making up a story about my therapy, marriage counseling, etc. and selling it.

It is fiction. Dont get yourself in a tizzy.
That's as silly as saying they shouldn't have had a therapist in the Sopranos.

21. The President's Therapist
I read this book--and if only W had done so 8 (or even 4) years ago, we'd all be better off. It is a great novel that treats W very kindly, and offers him--and anyone who reads the book--real help and insight. It was also a real page-turner and I read it in one sitting. You were right there in the room (the oval office and the crawford ranch, actually) with W and Dr. Alter (the therapist). I have to confess that the end was disturbing and left me wondering about the ad for the book. Anyway, if the aim of the ad (and the publisher) was to get people to interested in the book then it succeeded or we wouldn't be having all this discussion. I gather that the actual author--or, the one listed, anyway--is a NY leadership consultant who has written a bunch of other leadership books, so I guess he weighed the pros and cons of whether to put his name to this one--and I think anyone who reads the actual book will agree that he did the right thing by every last one of us, including W.

The promotion for the President's Therapist is getting real praise (and the book is now a bestseller, too). Check out this link and you'll find out why

28. I found the ad incredibly misleading
The link takes you to a fake "news" site, which is solely hyping the book. It really isn't clear until you start digging around that it is fiction.

Given the amount of facts about GWB, this just clouds things, and does so in a way that is pretty underhanded.

I respectfully think the ad should get pulled.
