DETROIT -- A person briefed on General Motors' plans says one of the two remaining shifts at an assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, will be laid off starting in April.
The person asked not to be identified because the plans have not been finalized. The person says workers at the plant have been told about the cuts and an official announcement could come as soon as Monday.
GM spokesman Tony Sapienza declined to comment on any cuts. He said the company always monitors production levels, especially in today's difficult market.
The Lordstown plant near Cleveland makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5. GM started running three shifts at the plant last year when gas prices spiked and demand for those small cars skyrocketed.
GM announced last month that it would eliminate the third shift, cutting 890 jobs.
