So cool: 1474 mega pixel photo of Inauguration - zoom in and check it out!

Wow.

I covered my first inauguration and what an inauguration it was.

Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in a ceremony on the west front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

Before Tuesday, I had photographed five presidents and covered big events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and concerts like Live 8 and Live Earth.

But this one was the biggest.

It deserved a big photo.

I made a panoramic image showing the nearly two million people who watched President Obama’s inaugural address. To do so, I clamped a Gigapan Imager to the railing on the north media platform about six feet from my photo position. The Gigapan is a robotic camera mount that allows me to take multiple images and stitch them together, creating a massive image file.

My final photo is made up of 220 Canon G10 images and the file is 59,783 X 24,658 pixels or 1,474 megapixels. It took more than six and a half hours for the Gigapan software to put together all of the images on my Macbook Pro and the completed TIF file is almost 2 gigabytes.

It's a great many individual photos stuck together. There's bound to be some weirdness just because they are not all taken at exactly the same time.

12. I zoomed in on someone with part of their hat floatin in front of their head

so it must have been a time lag between pictures and they moved and the software didn't know where to put the 2 colors of their hat :)

Bush, Joe Biden and the person to Cheney's left appear to be the only three sitting up front in what look like comfortable office chairs. Everyone else is sitting on a folding chair, with the exception, of course, of Darth who is sitting in a wheelchair, looking as ominous as he possibly can in that fucking hat and one more I spot up the aisle behind the ex-Vice President(The woman in white looking at the floor).

Who is the guy to Cheney's left with the nice chair? And did he get the nice chair only because Darth is in the wheelchair?

Find the red curtain thru which Obama entered from the Capitol. From the center of the top of the arc it forms, imagine line straight down. Where it intersects the first left/right aisle, there sits Newt.
