Reminder - Prayers for Bobby on tonight at 9 pm on Lifetime - Gay Teen Commits Suicide

Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Sigourney Weaver stars in this emotional true story about a 1970s religious suburban housewife and mother who struggles to accept her young son Bobby being gay. What happens to Bobby is tragic and causes Mary to question her faith; ultimately this mom changes her views in ways that she never could have imagined.

Also starring: Ryan Kelley ("Mean Creek"), Henry Czerny ("The Tudors"), Dan Butler ("Frasier"), Susan Ruttan ("L.A. Law"), Austin Nichols ("John From Cincinnati"), Carly Schroeder ("Mean Creek"), Scott Bailey ("Guiding Light"), and newcomers Shannon Eagen and Rebecca Louise Miller. Based on the book “Prayers for Bobby” by Leroy Aarons.

6. The ex-gay myth is one of the most disgusting aspects of modern Christian churches, the churches
that teach their parishioners to tell Gay people to pray heavily for God to lead them from this 'lifestyle choice' do a disservice to those they torment with promises of 'praying away the Gay'. They teach that rebuking their sexuality is the only way to live a Godly life. I know first hand how these groups can lead friends/family into believing that being Gay is a horrible thing to be. Shame is upon their lies. This focus against Gays in church has only been around really since the 80's when the religious-right started using GLBT people's differences as a wedge tool to raise money and votes for conservative 'values'.

soulforce.org A group that counters attacks on being Gay
truthwinsout.com One of our best Gay leaders, Wayne Besen's site that links to his personal page
gaychristian101.com A great resource for disproving the judgment against GLBT

I am looking forward to watching this tonight. But I hate sad story since you already revealed that Bobby is going to commit suicide. :( I saw preview and hoped that it'd have a happy ending.

9. It is the film based on the fairly famous book of the same name
which is the story of a real person. Sadly, there wasn't a real secret to reveal here.

21. Yeah
I watched the story on 20/20 years ago and remembered how sad it was then. This movie really brought it home.

12. Life isn't fiction, sadly. The movie doesn't end once he commits suicide, the mom became an advocate
so in a way it has a hopeful ending.

26. As I understand it, parents have a 30% chance of having a homosexual child . . .
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 11:37 PM by defendandprotect
guess they don't hear that in churches . . . ??

IMO, the moment that parents realized they didn't have to listen to old men

in churches and hate their children, this whole homophobic-church led BS was dead.

PS: We are an unbalanced society without contributions of homosexuals --

and we have to lessen the contributions of organized patriarchal religions which have

done such great harm to humankind.

I always still fear greatly for the young children taken in to be trained in religion --

and for the young homosexual who is expected to have the wisdom of the ages in working

their way thru this insanity. And, all of that while handling parents/family!

30. different churches teach different things
It is hard to keep your head above water when you wonder where you belong and what your role is supposed to be. Parents shouldn't make it harder that is for sure.

31. Sigourney Weaver & Ryan Kelley are outstanding in this true life movie!
It will be playing a couple of times more on Lifetime so if you missed it please try and catch it again. I wish I had a way to tape it for later viewing. I was very moved by Weaver's portrayal of the mother - It was really a very personal performance from the heart I felt. I hope she and Ryan Kelley win an award for their acting. The entire cast as well as the writers did a superb job!

32. they both had hard roles and did them splendidly.
You just wanted to hug Bobby and tell him it would be OK, he would make it through, and tell Mary to lay off.

36. let's hope every single person that needs to see it, does!
if it helps one person not kill themselves then it's a blessing. It was very sad watching it, knowing he was going to die. He had so much going for him, a new big town, friends, he even found MCC for his new church which was fantastic, but all he truly sought was his mother's acceptance and b/c he didn't get it, he fell deeper into doubting God loved him because someone he saw as a Godly woman, his very own mom, said he was separating himself from God by being Gay.

Thank God my Mom wasn't like that, of course, it's too bad only in her mourning could Mary Griffin see her judgment pretty much drove her son to suicide, but it's nice to see from much grief came much action on her part.

Again, let's hope all see it who need it - it was a well done movie. (hopefully, too, who I sent an email asking them to watch it saw it too, I can only hope).

35. Patriarchal religion is authoritarian and teaches it ...
Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 02:38 AM by defendandprotect
people don't question it and end up imitating it.

Religion supplies easy, quotable answers --- kinda like the insane

GOP easy answers: "Just say no!" "Get Over It!" "Tough Love"

"Love the sinner but not the sin!"

Yet if you looked, these were the people attacking the handicapped,

the poor, failing to help the homeless.

All while increasing their own wealth!

38. his family actually loves him
this wasn't a case where they kicked him out or were hateful towards him.

but his mother's refusal to accept him and to think there was something wrong with him. it showed that what these Rick Warren types do is not love. all the shit about love the sinner, hate the sin is crap. and especially when your own mother or other relative does it has got to be even worse.

39. yes, it was nice to see the fam accept him, she must have hounded him & treated him horrible, like
how his grandma said at the beginning, she was taught negatively about gay people and then it bit her in the rear as her beloved bright son was Gay, like she said she finally realized and knew all along, but was living in denial. So sad he was really getting better it seemed, but his fear of God hating him for being gay was just too much for him along with her never-ending judgment. I'm glad she's committed her life to being an activist - she HAD to do that.

Others reading the thread - this will be on again, I'm sure, check it out, it's a solid 3 star+ TV movie!
