Planned Parenthood attacker was mentally ill, court records show

The man who police say intentionally drove his SUV into the front of a Planned Parenthood clinic in St. Paul today — the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion — has been hospitalized for mental illness at least 12 times since 2004, court records show.

Matthew Lee Derosia, arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, was last hospitalized in November after police said he destroyed property at a Cottage Grove church. When Derosia got out of his vehicle today, police say he was chanting or praying.

Derosia was also waving a crucifix and shouting, "Shut down this Auschwitz," said Sarah Stoesz, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota.

No one was injured. The building at 1965 Ford Parkway had minor damage, Stoesz said.

Derosia, 32, suffers from schizoaffective disorder and has "delusional thoughts and religious preoccupation," according to an order for commitment filed Dec. 23 in Ramsey County Mental Health Court. "He feels tormented because of his religious beliefs."

3. That would kinda set a precedent for lots of other wingnuts
Although a forced lithium drip is not at all a bad idea. I say we start with Ann Coulter and work our way down.

8. Sounds tempting, but it's not really a road we ought to go down.
Ever heard of "sluggishly progressing schizophrenia"?

17. His mental disease has made him a public danger. He needs confinement
with appropriate care.

And I say this as a person with a family member who has suffered with schizophrenia for decades - at least SHE never hurt anybody or tried to. FAILURE to treat the mentally ill merely because their delusions tell them to refuse treatment is a national disgrace and destroyed my mom's hope for a normal life.

18. Oh, sorry. I wasn't talking about the guy in the article at all.
Of course he needs treatment - he just committed a violent crime (aggravated assault), for Christ's sake! No pun intended...

Rather, I was referring to another poster's most likely tongue-in-cheek suggestion that hard-right political types in general might need psychiatric treatment. I said that was a dangerous road to go down, and I gave the Wikipedia link to show an example of why. The Soviets had hundreds, if not thousands of people confined and forcibly "treated" because their political views supposedly meant they were mentally ill. They even fabricated a disorder they called "sluggishly progressing schizophrenia" to make it easier to carry out these abuses.

2. I wish they would test the other people also.
I also wish this would be a front page story so perhaps it would cause some soul searching.

5. How does a guy with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder and a long history of hospitalization...
AND a prior arrest for destroying property, get to keep his driver's license?

BTW Every time I read "1965 Ford Parkway" I visualize a street named after a classic car.

10. You should.....
(assuming you are not grom MN).....that's right near the Ford assembly plant. It has been threatened with closure about 1000 times over the years. But still there making Ford ranger pickups.
They used to make a variety of models there and I remember as a kid how people around here would try and get an actual St. Paul Ford if they were gonna buy a Ford car.
We all figured that would be the best Ford possible.

Imagine that! Local pride in ......... MANUFACTURING!!!!!!

6. Schizoaffective disorder, from what little I know of it, seems like the worst of all worlds.
You get a little bit of schizophrenia, a little bit of bi-polar, a little bit of antisocial personality, all topped off with a degree of autism-like symptoms (social avoidance, lack of meaningful relationships, etc.). Tragic stuff, really.

12. Some of them are just misguided
If the first thing you were taught about Planned Parenthood was that Margaret Sanger was a proponent of eugenics, you've always been around people who say abortion is evil, and haven't been exposed any other viewpoint, you might reasonably have a negative opinion of Planned Parenthood.

19. There's a much higher prevalence of mental illness among the anti-choice crowd
and it's almost always on display at their rallies.
