Former New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias, who was infamously fired by the Bush administration, has a new gig. He’s been reactivated as a Navy judge advocate general — commonly known as a Navy JAG — prosecuting cases of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (also know as Gitmo).

Iglesias told local news station KRQE Channel 13 about his new position, saying he was part of a special team that was spending 100 percent of its time prosecuting terrorism cases. He’s already been looking through files and has been to Gitmo once, he said. Whether he goes again depends on the direction the new administration gives.

Iglesias spoke with confidence on the question of Gitmo’s being closed by President Obama. The detention facility holds approximately 250 alleged terrorists, he said, and it will be closed in the “next year or so.” It’s his understanding, he continued, that there will be a “stand-down order” in the next 72 hours. He’s just waiting to find out what venue he’ll be working in — either federal or military.
