Brownback bill seeks 90-day notice before trying to close Guantanamo

The Associated Press

TOPEKA | Sen. Sam Brownback introduced legislation Wednesday requiring President Barack Obama to give Congress a 90-day notice before moving to close the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The Kansas Republicans bill also would require the president to provide a study on the feasibility of closing the facility in Cuba or transferring some 245 suspected terrorists to any other location.

One site often mentioned is the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, along with Camp Pendleton, Calif., and a Navy brig in South Carolina.

Given the timing, there is little chance Brownbacks bill would be enacted before Obama issues an executive order. However, Brownbacks staff said the legislation would be compatible with Obamas desire to make a decision within a year, giving ample time for review.

Fellow Republicans Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas and Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri co-sponsored Brownbacks bill.

4. And he has already announced he is not running for re-election
We think he is going to run for governor in 2010.

Lord help us in Kansas.

6. That was my first thought as well
But he has been making all kinds of noise about this since we were told the Gittmos detainees would be coming here. So this could be for show. He is supposedly running for governor in 2010.

7. Even if the bill gets to the floor and passes, can't the president simply sign
an order contravening the bill?

lol

14. Not signing would be too honest and half of the Republicans in Congress
might expire from the shock.

20. I know I am preparing the welcome mat for the Gittmo detainees
cause I doubt Brownback will be able to keep them from coming here.

I did hear Sebelius is against it too though so she may try to ask Obama to send them somewhere else.

But it does look more and more like a done deal.

in our federal penitentiaries. It would look bad.

25. I guess I was thinking that a veto has different consequences
than a signing statement. That would be, the loophole Junior used to subvert our system of government. I was being facetious.

I don't recall any robust discussion and debate when Chimpy decided to open his own version of a concentration camp.

Or are we going to have to hear that incessant fucking whining about "up or down" again?

Republicans. Politics as usual.
I'm sorry. I think Obama has reached out enough to them...now he needs to knock them down a peg or two if they continue this shit.

21. As a Kansan...
I have absolutely no qualms with transferring Gitmo detainees to Ft Leavenworth. It is as secure a prison as our country has, and it is irrational and childish to be afraid of the terrorist boogie man.

29. That doesn't bother me either...
Those labs are very secure and very advanced. Were there to be an airleak somewhere in the building, air would rush into the lab, as it is negatively pressurized relative to the ambient air. Also, the lab will be very beneficial to both KU and KSU. Northeast Kansas is trying to make itself into a biology capital, and this certainly helps.
