Anyone Else Convinced We Just Witnessed a 'Velvet Revolution'- American Style?
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 07:35 AM by JCMach1
With the former dictator booed and escorted off of the stage...

I know we need to wait for the legislation and order to come down the line, but his speech was not quite what I expected. It was a complete repudiation of the last eight years and at the same time sunk its roots in the revolutionary sacrifices of Washington and Lincoln.

For me, yesterday's speech was impressive. Obama intends to lead a revolutionary departure from the recent past and that's exactly where we need to go right now.

1. it was a 'heady' speech, but won't say 'revolution' until things actually change
until then, I'm skeptical. I would like to see our republic actually restored in fact, not just in the narrative.

2. His speech said everything I wanted to hear.
But now he will be met with the realities of making those things happen.
It was not the velvet revolution but a deceleration of it.

3. Realities like peak oil?
He said "we", we must learn to live with a smaller share of the world's resources. That's not going to be an easy sell, but conservation doesn't have to mean sacrifice. Obama has to set the goals, but we need to change our wasteful habits.

7. Absolutely!
But I think most Americans are ready for that and know it is necessary.
It is the hard core wing nuts that will never change...

6. The revolution isn't Obama, it's the youth-dominated movement that delivered him the presidency.

Obama is merely our instrument.

The revolution is being televised and brought to you live. :)

8. I think you're right.
Obama is a catalyst who galvanizes the forces that want an integral approach to government.

He's a revolutionary voice in that he disarms his opponents rather than brow-beating detractors into submission. At the same time, the man is emotionally solid as a rock. Truly a transformative leader.

He's constantly evoking everyone's better angels. Those who resist do look petty, wrong-headed and evil. His strategy is genius!
