A white guy in Alabama... Who still has his Obama sticker on his car.
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 12:31 AM by Just A Yeller Dawg
Sorry, that's me.

55 years old and can remember the white and colored water fountains. My mother's biggest concern right now is Obama's safety during all the inauguration ceremonies.

I held a "Dump Dick" sign no more than 20 feet in front of Nixon when he visited down here. I protested against Lt. Calley of the Mai Lai massacre and nearly got my ass kicked. I marched against segregation and did get my ass kicked.

I am a Southerner.

And I am a Liberal. Left of... take your pick.

But this morning, I am so proud and happy of what is about to happen in a few hours. I am so relieved the bush dynasty is at an end.

I want to hug you all here in celebration of what we have ALL done together.

Peace.

...My Obama sticker is still eliciting sneers on the road.

Born a couple of months after Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was bombed and grew up just up the hill from there. I don't remember the fountains themselves, but the wake of it all remained for years and still lingers in ways.

I am more joyful than I've been in years at what I'm witnessing. This is up there with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the moon landing in significance during my lifetime.

7. Ten years older than you and I remember all that crap too.
I remember feeling embarrassed at a very young age, knowing deep down inside that all that shit was just wrong. Now, I have the urge to apologize to every black person I walk by and tell them I'm sorry it took us so damn long. I live in CA, but where you live - you got guts, man.:yourock:

28. 15 years older than you and I remember quite clearly.
I lived in Miami. I remember the separate water fountains and bathrooms. And also I remember that blacks had to sit at the back of the bus. And I attended segregated schools. It was only when I was married and went to New Jersey with my husband that I saw blacks in movie theaters and restaurants. I was quite shocked having grown up in the South.

18. Count this old rebel in on the celebration too, Yeller Dawg. This is about as sweet
as it gets for those of us who have seen the world as it was and now see a new day breaking on the horizon.

I can only imagine how this must feel to my black friends. But I'm deliriously happy for all of us.

Peace to you as well.

23. Alabama man here, and proud Obama supporter.
My wife refuses to watch the inauguration, fearing for Obama's safety.

But I will watch, and I will take pleasure in the repudiation of the regressive values of a majority of my state. We aren't all backward here in the heart of Dixie. My redneck Alabama household will be supporting Obama all the way.

And that is a fact.

They had a great impact on my political outlook.

Wonderful people.

29. I'm a brazillionth generation South Carolinian and
this is one of the happiest days of my life. I too remember the colored and white water fountains. When I was little, I remember going up to the colored fountain every time because I wanted to see the red and blue water. I was always marching to a different drummer.

32. I remember the segregated restrooms here, too...
Things have changed a lot in Alabama since then, but some things never do. Some assholes here in Hartselle hung a confederate flag at a predominately black church in town yesterday. I guess the mouth breathers thought it was clever.
Yeah, they love them some rebel flags here. "But but... it's part of our heritage!"
It's a shame the dumb asses don't realize that fully one-half of those from Morgan county that fought in the Civil War served in the Union army.
Maybe I should burn a rebel flag on April 12 in honor of Lee's surrender.
