Bruce Sprinsteen Kicked Off Obama Inauguration Concert with THIS SONG!
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 06:43 PM by KoKo01
When I first heard this song (Convention Hall version) I was blown away by the words, music and passion.

Obama must have been, too, because he chose it for one of his featured Campaign Stump Songs and Bruce did many concerts promoting Obama including a FREE ONE in Ohio in the last days of the Campaign. In today's Inaugural Celebration on the "Mall" in DC, Bruce led off with just himself and his guitar backed by a wonderful Gospel Choir. It was raw, unplugged style.

I post this version because since "9/11" this is the song that kept me motivated to DEFEAT THE BUSH CRIMINALS ...NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TOOK or WILL TAKE! Obviously Obama found this song an inspiration, too. And, that makes me have much hope for him. The people behind him have GREAT "JU JU!"

This is the version of this one that is the most incredible to my ear...that always brings me to tears when I play it from "You Tube."

BTW: "Laptop Speakers" just don't do this song and version of it justice. Listening with FULL SPEAKERS is "puddles on the floor" for some of us. But, however you listen...it's what many of us have lived through under Bush Regime. AND...THANK GOD (Hope Willing he doesn't pull ANOTHER STUNT) that EVIL will be out of the White House in just about 36 HOURS! Then that "60 Pound STONE..will be off our backs!

LYRICS:

Can't see nothin' in front of me
Can't see nothin' coming up behind
I make my way through this darkness
I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I've gone
How far I've gone, how high I've climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder a half mile of line

Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

Left the house this morning
Bells ringing filled the air
Wearin' the cross of my calling
On wheels of fire I come rollin' down here

Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

Li,li, li,li,li,li, li,li,li

There's spirits above and behind me
Faces gone black, eyes burnin' bright
May their precious blood bind me
Lord, as I stand before your fiery light

Li,li, li,li,li,li, li,li,li

I see you Mary in the garden
In the garden of a thousand sighs
There's holy pictures of our children
Dancin' in a sky filled with light
May I feel your arms around me
May I feel your blood mix with mine
A dream of life comes to me
Like a catfish dancin' on the end of my line

Sky of blackness and sorrow ( a dream of life)
Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)
Sky of glory and sadness ( a dream of life)
Sky of mercy, sky of fear ( a dream of life)
Sky of memory and shadow ( a dream of life)
Your burnin' wind fills my arms tonight
Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)
Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life

Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

1. I was thrilled
I was SO glad that Bruce opened the show, but that was the song I hoped he would sing.

It's phenomenal. I can never listen to it without getting weepy. Today was no exception.

Thanks for the great youtube version.

Didn't he write it in the wake of 9/11?

"9/11" more clearly...here, RISING STAR/EMPTY SKY..(Woke Up this Mornin'):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b-zxmuhfS8&NR=1

It's Called "Rising Star/Empty Sky" and it's definitely "9/11." "The Rising" was said to be a Firefighter and Priest rushing up to clear the Twin Towers and how hard it was. But, the song morphed into the "weight on our back" under the Bush Criminal Administration where he cut us all out and the weight of his sins were on our back. I always go with the "latter version" of that song. It can sort of apply to any shit we've all lived through for the past decades.

7. The whole disc, The Rising,
was written about 9/11.

He did a lot of work fundraising for the widows of 9/11. He lives in their neighborhood.

10. Yes. Many, many lost from the area. Widows and others who
lost people used to find Bruce around, as he's wont to be, and he'd come and talk with them. Their situation really moved him, I think.

9. There's no one like Bruce.
And nothing's going to displace Thunder Road as my all-time fav, but this is definitely one of his best. Goosebumps every time I hear it!
