Four Activists Arrested in Pelosi's Office
Source: CODEPINK

As the house began to debate the $100 billion Supplemental Bill on the floor of Congress, four CODEPINKers were arrested taking over Speaker Pelosi’s office. As they held up images of the American soldiers killed this month in Iraq and chanted “stop funding the war,” police moved in and arrested four CODEPINK representatives: Eve Tetaz from DC, Desiree Fairooz from Arlington, Texas, Janine Bonaparte from Marin, CA, and David Barrows also from DC.

In her statement Medea Benjamin said: “If Pelosi—who was given a mandate for peace in the November election—buys this war, she owns this war. And what she owns is 3228 American soldiers killed, and those soldiers, those sons who will be killed as the war rages on.”

During the action at Pelosi's office, we held up banners that read "Pelosi, be a leader for peace" and "Pelosi, Don't Buy Bush's War". We also had a large banner with a donkey that said "Pin the War on the Donkey" and tails reading "War" "Torture" "War Profiteering" and more.

At one point, while we were speaking with the abundant crowd of reporters, we held up photos of soldiers who have been killed in the war, attached with a string. A police officer immediately snatched the photos and said they were a banner and not allowed in. We said that these were not a banner, these were the faces of the dead. Even the press looked horrified and snapped some photos of the ordeal. After putting away the pictures, we took out a newspaper with the faces of the dead printed in color and held it up. And we started crying. Not fake wailing. Not shouting. Just crying. Tears and tears and we couldn't help it, and I couldn't help it. And instead of reporters asking "Why are you here protesting?" or "What are you doing here today?" they asked me "Why are you crying?" And this is what I said:

I am crying because the Democrats' support of another $100 billion for the war means that thousands more kids my age will be killed--kid soldiers and Iraqi kids. Pelosi's support of Bush's request for money for war is a death sentence for thousands of kids. After weeks of cute, colorful, passionate actions in the halls of Congress, from caroling with the choir to valentine delivery to dog bones for Blue Dogs to pink aprons and brooms cleaning House, today was an action of a different tenor. I felt like the floodgates had come down and the halls of Congress were gushing with a bloody river. Maybe it sounds dramatic. But it felt like we were drowning in tears, in pain, in the realization of something very, very wrong. And the tragic part was that the two secretaries in Pelosi's office sat there chuckling and picking up phones, and the press liaison came out and answered reporter's questions with a blank face. My heart was pounding so loudly that I wondered why it didn't just crack the walls of the marble building. Those walls felt more sturdy and guarded than usual. How have our Democratic leaders become so enchanted by the Republican language? Pelosi has helped them back into a corner where Bush will emerge victorious. And the tragic thing is that they will tout this as a victory if it passes.

I visited Anna Eshoo's office after the action, and her press secretary tried to explain to me why Anna is going to vote for this supplemental. He gave me the analogy of a football game, where one must work strategically one play at a time to get the ball up the field to the goal. Here's why I think that's a bogus comparison: The compromise that Pelosi and the Dems are voting for is not one step towards peace; it is one step towards prolonging violence and destruction, and killing innocent lives for nothing. The press liaison listened patiently to my opinion, and then told me that we have the same goal, just different tactics. But I am quite certain now that we don't have the same goal. The Democrats want to win. I want to see the killing stop. I want to welcome our soldiers home with open arms and fully equipped medical services. I want to see justice done to the administration. The Democrats, well, they want to win--this vote, the election in '08, the power. If Pelosi would have just come out and said, "Look, I know that this bill (or ammendment like Lee's) may fail, but I am going to take this stand because I believe in the courage of my convictions, because I am more committed to the will of my constituents and the integrity of justice." But we'll never get to find out what Dems would have done if the supplemental had been straight with Bush's desires. And now it's a mess.

4. I hope you folks take a look at how much support you're losing
even on DU- where the average reader is far, far more liberal than the general public. Someone put up a post last night in GD Politics and something like 81% of the respondents believed that Code Pinks Camp Pelosi project is counterproductive. Keep it up and see how much more support you can lose.

8. I think they're assholes, myself. I think they are NOT helping. And I've said it plenty here.
If you turn on HOUSE CSPAN, you see the REAL fight to end the war going on.

Jack Murtha is on FIRE right now!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has been so long since I have heard APPLAUSE in the House during the course of daily business, it's damned near discombobulating.

It sounds good to me.

"We're GONNA MAKE A DIFFERENCE with this bill!!!" Says Murtha.

"We're gonna BRING THESE TROOPS HOME!!!!"

The applause is SUSTAINED!!!

32. Agreed they are turning counterproductive.
They pissed off a lot of Dems with their little stunt at Valerie Plame's hearing.

WTF was that supposed to be about? A Dem hearing with a super important witness, that we've all been awaiting for years, and some attention whore in a pink tutu is sitting behind her so he'll be on TV! WTF was the point of that?

And now they're going after the Dem leadership, who right this minute is passing the toughest appropriations bill possible! Again, WTF is the point of that? Enough with the freak show.

And mods, before you delete this comment, I want you to look at my record here. I am a long-time subscriber, poster, and contributor to DU, and I think a lot of the community is turning against Code Pink because of their counterproductive tactics.

said what they were doing was "counter productive."

Fortunatly they followed their hearts, their heads, the consciences and didn't let the nay sayers get in the way of important work.

Ever visit the code pink web site? It's great. They have pictures of various actions from all over the country. Check it out.

71. exactly -- the Democratic majority was put there by a diverse group of voters
Yes, it included anti-war voters. But it also included voters upset about corruption, voters who were angered by the handling of the Mark Foley situation, voters horrified by the incompetence demonstrated by chimpy and the repubs in dealing with Katrina.

Its a fragile coalition and thus has to move with care so as not to break apart. That's just the reality of it.

86. It is inaccurate to imply that Code Pink and the anti-war vote are one and the same.
I was part of the anti-war vote and I think Code Pink is more interested in getting attention for themselves than helping get out of Iraq. The stunt at the Plame hearing told me everything I need to know about these people. And comparisons with MLK elsewhere in this thread are as pompous as they are offensive.

88. Not shy about taking credit are you?
If I may be so bold, I actually have a grip. And no thank you I already have plenty of links and won't need that one that is getting pimped here with every other post. The MSM is finally paying attention as you say - but to Code Pink. It's silly to claim that the MSM wouldn't be paying attention to the war, and that many here at DU wouldn't be "sort of aware" if it weren't for Code Pink. Puh leeze.

At least you're doing SOMETHING, right? Charles Manson went out and did SOMETHING. I have found my life is more meaningful if I try to do SOMETHING RIGHT. If you manage to discredit Democrats enough, maybe you can help get a neocon president elected in 2008 and give them Congress back too. Then when we end up invading Iran and never getting out of Iraq I'm sure none of that will be your fault.

Did you know that only 21% of Americans support an immediate withdrawal from Iraq? 37% think they should come home within a year. 21% + 37% = 58% support for getting out in a year or less. Democrats are trying right now to put together something that would do that.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/13/iraq.poll/index.html

Now run along and continue high-fiving with members of your little self-congratulating social club and see how much more attention you can draw to yourselves. I hope you won't mind if a few of us others try to help get something done that will actually have a chance of ending US involvement in the war.

I have yet to see a single Republican harassed by these supposed "liberal" protesters.

Apparently, having the slimmest of majorities in Congress (and not really one in the Senate) and two and a half months of actual governance isn't enough for these people. They probably also expect the Democrats to walk on water, turn lead into gold and cure cancer, too.

"If I knew you were comin', I'd have baked a cake!"
--rosemary clooney.

08.06.03 --
On this prototypical Dog Day afternoon, upwards of fifty to a hundred stalwart, sweltering,
sweaty souls of conscience joined Code Pink at Dupont Circle and took a leisurely "cake walk"
to Donald Rumsfeld's house to shed light on the staggering pattern of lies and deception used
by Rumsfeld, Bush and others to prop up their rationale for the ongoing war and occupation of Iraq.
Once at Rumsfeld's place, Code Pink presented the Defense Secretary with their traditional "report
card" detailing his and the Bush Administration's failures in English ("Bring it on") and geography
("thinks Iraq is the USA"), as part of Code Pink's continuing "No Politician Left Behind"
educational program. This was followed with the presentation of the symbolic "yellow cake"
symbolizing the non-existent uranium mentioned by President Junior with his infamous "sixteen
dirty words" in the State Of The Union address. The cake turned out to be not at all radioactive,
entirely edible, and with a sweet creamy lemon frosting. Mmmmm, nummy.

Yellow Cake symbolizing President Dubya's State Of The Union lies

his symbolic failing report card, and invite him out for a piece
of the symbolic and entirely non-radioactive yellow cake.

The Dems voted for this war too ... if Pelosi won't do what she was elected into power to do we need a REVOLUTION ... Do we have a Democratic government or just two Mafia families vying for power? ... keep up the fire!! ...

22. Good for Code Pink
As the Dems slowly move that ball up the field more lives will be lost. The only way to stop it is to stop it.

I have no problem, none at all, with the idea of holding Democrats feet to the same fire we have held Republican feet. Isn't that what we as citizens are supposed to do? All the emails and phone calls and snail mails don't work with some people. Whatever it takes.

26. Preaching to the choir.
And irritating them as well. Pelosi is on our side. She wants the war to end just like we do! But it isn't going to happen at once. All this will do is give the pundits ammunition to portray the Democratic as turning on itself. To the people who don't pay a lot attention to politics thats is all they will remember when they tap the screen.

67. I didn't blame anyone for anything
I don't see where aggravating people that are trying to do what you want them to do is helpful. The idea is to get people to work with you not piss them off. Nancy is working with you or trying to, she can't end the war without the votes. So help her get the votes she needs, disrupting the speaker of house's office and home is going to accomplish what?

So they really need any ass kicking they get at this point, because this sure as shit isn't a healthy democracy or the best of times.

Thanks both for your post and your commitment to ending this disastrous war. I find myself caught in the middle (an uncomfortable place): I want the troops out NOW, not 2008, but NOW. At the same time, I admire people like John Murtha who are fighting to get our troops home within all the obstacles and constraints of the political system.

38. Link to SF Chronicle article: Police tell anti-war protesters to take down 'Camp Pelosi'
(03-22) 21:32 PDT -- Anti-war protesters in their 11th day of a round-the-clock vigil in front of Rep. Nancy Pelosi's Pacific Heights home were ordered by San Francisco police Thursday night to remove protest signs, banners and canopies that adorned what they called Camp Pelosi.

But protesters vowed to stay put until today's House vote on funding the war in Iraq.

"We'll still sit here overnight and tomorrow until the vote,'' said Cynthia Papermaster, a member of Code Pink: Women for Peace, which organized the sit-in.

(snip)

Four members of Code Pink attempting to send the same message by taking over Pelosi's office in Washington were arrested Tuesday. They included at least one Bay Area resident, Janine Bonaparte from Marin County, according to a Code Pink press release.

45. Keep on demonizing the Dems.
No matter how hard they try, it makes no difference.

NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU WANT HER TO, NANCY CANNOT CLICK HER HEELS THREE TIMES AND WISH "BRING THE TROOPS HOME" AND HAVE THEM MAGICALLY APPEAR IN FRONT OF YOU!

Instead of trying to making our side look like assholes why don't you go camp out on the Rebuplicans doorsteps and put pressure on them. No matter what you fucking think you are accomplishing the republicans are now sitting back laughing as people wo are supposedly on our saide work like hell to make our leaders look incompetant.

I want the soldiers home as much as anyone. My brother is there. I am fucking scared to death he will leave his 4 boys and 1 little girl fatherless. But going after our own leader is not the way to do it. Go after the fuckers that are pro-war, put pressure on them. Make them look like asses.

52. Bring those "chickenhawks" down!
Pelosi and all her buddies voting for this illegal and lying war need to be brought down! Invade their offices with protests. Send them emails telling them what actions you plan to punish them for their vote. Bring them to their knees!

You won the election for them, now make them pay, one way or another! If they can end the war by May, make them pay. We need their vote now. If we don't get it, vote them out later.

58. Medea Benjamin said:
“If Pelosi—who was given a mandate for peace in the November election—buys this war, she owns this war."

Did they drop her on her head when they carried her out of the Democratic National Convention a couple of years ago? What is wrong with these people?

I am sorry there are those who want to sabatoge this wonderful post because they apparently support many more deaths, because of course the funding being allowed will do just that, like it or not.

Keep up the terrific work*****

CODEPINK ROCKS AND CARES MORE ABOUT THE TROOPS AND THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN and IRAQ than those in Congress who just allowed another check to be given to the Bush Administration.
