Either one would be great I am sure - PE Obama also said on TV today that he is going to find one of these from a shelter. I am sure he can find out easily when the time comes with so many people having to give up their pets because of the recession. Thanks for posting the pictures!

19. The third one is an English Mastiff, but there is controversy
over the shot--some saying the photo is a hoax... They can get pretty big, but this is pretty incredible, I must say. Not sure on the other two, as just found them on a google of "largest dogs"....

30. The mastiff is out of scale
The largest dog anyone was ever brave enough to weigh was an
English Mastiff.
He was 8 feet nose to tail tip and 349 pounds.
You can count on about two thirds of that from a typical
adult male mastiff.
Giant category dogs pay for their size with shorter life and
reduced top speed (35 instead of 40 mph).
In Obama's shoes I'd pick the puli.
The dog has the best dredlocks outside of Jamaica.

29. They Don't Need a Pit Bull
it was bad enough when Barney bit a reporter! If it had been a pit bull, the reporter's hand would have been torn off.

Now, I understand Pit Bulls get a bad rap that is largely undeserved. True, the breed has been corrupted by rotten people breeding and training these dogs to fight. I also think that Pit Bulls are often "owned" by people who really don't know how to handle them. Add to that the incredible strength of a pit bulls jaw and I think they do better in stable homes with people who have experience dealing with the breed.

I would love to see a cat in the White House, but with Malia's allergies, I don't see it happening.

34. Bullies are big babies
If they're not combat trained they're main concerns
are food, being around their owners, and play.
I'd get a rescue dog for myself.
But for the White House, if they pass they allergy requirement,
I'd say start with a puppy.

47. It's Not Just Hype
Some insurance companies have deemed certain breeds of dog more dangerous than others. These companies love money and statistics. It may sound odd trusting an insurance company, but in this case, recognizing them as greedy is what makes me think they have some valid reason for their practice when it comes to dogs. That is, they have analyzed the statistics and it has led them to believe they are more likely to have to pay out a claim in a home with a pit bull than one with say, a Golden Retriever.

48. It's called shit data, but nontheless. You mentioned some sort of
superstrong type jaws. I was wondering about that. Considering that a pit bull has the bite strength somewhere beneath a German Shepherd, that is. Just curious.

18. A standard poodle would be better than a labradoodle
there are many labradoodles and goldendoodles in the shelters because if they take more after the non-poodle parent, they can be big shedders and not have the hypo allergenic properties of a well bred poodle. If they are worried about allergies a purebred poodle would be best.

23. Yes that is true - I know they are going to go to a shelter to get one & you raise a good point.
I was looking at the shelter Labradoodles and they did all look different - some more poodle like and some more Lab like. I am sure when they find the right one that tugs at their heart they will know.

27. Standard poodle
I have one that will be 13 in April. Poodles are smart, funny, great hunters (mine has caught 4 rabbits and a couple of chipmonks), don't shed at all, good natured with kids, love to play. One downside is they have to be groomed every 6 weeks. You can get them from a poodle rescue which is almost as good as getting a dog from a shelter.

21. How about a Cockapoo - Labradoodle cross? Aka a Cockapoodledoo?
On a more serious note, one of the girls is allergic, so maybe one of those Peruvian hairless would fit the bill?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/12/peru-offers-national-hair_n_143228.html

"It has to be hypoallergenic. On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me," the president-elect said.

The Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association responded on Monday, sending a letter to the U.S. Embassy in Peru offering the Obama family a 4-month-old pup that responds to "Machu Picchu," the name of Peru's famed Inca citadel.

I hear retired racing greyhounds make great pets. I've met a couple and they're probably the most mellow dogs I've ever been around. :)

ETA: According to the Google, they're a good choice for people with allergies, too.

I am sure there are plenty of either breed in shelters. I did find more Labradoodles in shelters when I did a search. There are a lot of pure breed dogs of all types in shelters because of the economy right now though.

44. I love them! I once knew a wonderful woman who bred them
and I grew to love them from visiting her. (She bred only 1 or 2 dogs and she hand raised them inside her own home for the people who will jump onto me and accuse my friend of running an AKC puppy mill and all pure bred dogs and their breeders are anathema)

Anyway, these are minature greyhounds. They are sweet, they are good natured. I have only ever had cats, but if I were ever to have a dog, my choices are between 2 breeds (aside from mutts which are great too) - I really love Shelties and Italian greyhounds based on my personal experience of knowing them vicariously.

31. Bouvier! In fact this very puppy could be theirs...

This is one of the puppies from a litter of 5, 3 girls and 2 boys. This is one of the boys. My friend, who bred the puppies, calls him Heisman. We have been joking back and forth about how we can get the Obama's to adopt one of the pups. Hypo-allergenic, great with kids, don't need a great deal of exercise, protective without being obsessive...just great dogs.

Of course, I am not prejudiced in the least...I only share my home with three of them.

I know he'd be a good boy. He could keep all the Congress Critters herded up, and chase away the lobbyists. Actually, bouvs don't "chase" away anyone. They just stand there and look important. Unwanteds usually get the message, and leave all on their own. Then the bouv can go back to the important business of the day...like lying on the couch, or a bed if available.

46. "Heisman"?? (Hmph.) I'd call him "Poppy," "Desi," or "Dinant."
Edited on Sun Jan-11-09 10:31 PM by TahitiNut
But I'm the kind that's gotta go with some allusion to the breed origin, even remote or silly.

I'd guess that "Poppy" isn't really all that original ... or "Desi" ("Dizzy"?) either. "Dinant" is a beautiful city in Belgium not too awfully far (less than 2 hours) from 'Flanders field.' (Yes, there are a few other Boovies with 'Dinant' in their name.)

(Strangely, not many are called "Booboo." Funny, that.) :silly:
Dinant (pop. 12,500) is a picturesque town sitting near the confluence of the Meuse and Lesse Rivers. It was the hometown of Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), the inventor of the saxophone. Leffe, the local beer named after the abbey, is one of the most well-known Belgian beers worldwide.

I have a feeling her hubby had a hand in the temporary name for this one. That particular male is a hefty one...so, yeah, you get the picture. It is always interesting to see what their real names become. The bitch's name is Breezy and Dad is Indy.
Not in this litter, but in one that my Alex sired, we had a huge male we coined "Bill". There was a female in the litter who hung out with Bill a lot, so we named her Monica.

Here's a pic of Breezy and her newborns.

Monica looks happy, "accomplished," and a bit overwhelmed. I'm always impressed that it "takes a lot out" of the bitch/mommy ... and that they rise to meet the challenge. There's just so much that seems to "come natural" ... and they seem to 'know' what to do even though it's such a HUGE change to their "lifestyle."
