true, don't want to believe it, and fear that somehow they may be caught up in it in the end...

I've had so many conversations like that in the last few years.

The "Brain Hurt" part is especially true. I've had to learn to let them stand in the rain.

18. i miss this comic
the morons at the milwaukee journal/sentinel decided to poll the readers, and the problem is they either didn't take internet voting into account (there wasn't any) or just targetted a select demographic of hard core subscribers.

friend of mine that worked at the j/s mentioned to me when i complained that the phone polling they did was mostly to the suburbs like waukesha and mequon, both hard core red areas. and the mail in ballots were sent to "older" subscribers...

given that audience, it didn't shock up when non sequiter got the axe. it was both too high-brow (in most cases) and too anti-bush.

The People Front of Judea ( or was it the Judean People's Front? )... in any case.. as they wander the streets and watch the gladiator matches they are talking in a way that is absolutely 100% reminiscent of DU.

This is not the dialogue I was thinking about specifically but you get the idea.

edited: to add another that was closer to what I was thinking of...

_______________________

Judith: Here! I've got an idea: Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb - which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' - but that he can have the *right* to have babies.
Francis: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother... sister, sorry.
Reg: What's the *point*?
Francis: What?
Reg: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies, when he can't have babies?
Francis: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
Reg: It's symbolic of his struggle against reality.

_______________________

Reg: They've bled us white, the bastards. They've taken
everything we had, and not just from us, from our fathers,
and from our fathers' fathers.
Loretta: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.
Reg: Yeah.
Loretta: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.
Reg: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what
have they ever given us in return?!
Xerxes: The aqueduct?
Reg: What?
Xerxes: The aqueduct.
Reg: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true.
Yeah.
Commando 3: And the sanitation.
Loretta: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city
used to be like?
Reg: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the
sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
Matthias: And the roads.
Reg: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go
without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation,
the aqueduct, and the roads--
Commando: Irrigation.
Xerxes: Medicine.
Commandos: Huh? Heh? Huh...
Commando 2: Education.
Commandos: Ohh...
Reg: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
Commando 1: And the wine.
Commandos: Oh, yes. Yeah...
Francis: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg,
if the Romans left. Huh.
Commando: Public baths.
Loretta: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now,
Reg.
Francis: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's
face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
Commandos: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
Reg: But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education,
wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system,
and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Xerxes: Brought peace?
Reg: Oh, peace? Shut up

39. The conversations range so widely here though that just about any given DUer
Could play either part on any given thread.

I've never met anyone who doesn't have an ideology, some have a stronger attachment to their ideology than others but everyone has one (or a multiplicity of them actually, different ideologies for different subjects).
