Magistrate Appreciation Thread
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 08:42 PM by Mike 03
There are so many kind, courteous people here, but I have to just say that The Magistrate is someone who has been so kind to everyone for years and I've never had the common sense to tell him (I am assuming it's a 'him') how much I appreciate his eloquence, civility and intelligence.

He reminds me of my favorite professors. He is patient, knowledgeable, forgiving and kind.

An awesome person here at DU. The Magistrate is another reason it's so gratifying to have found a website like DU.

I've been off and on lately, since my elderly computer here finally gave up the ghost. My friend kindly lends me his laptop, since I feel out of touch with the world when I can't access DU... I'm hoping that this situation is temporary... *fingers crossed*

It's especially necessary that I learn what's really going on in the world now, since we've sure been hit with a plethora of news... I've even stepped back into "The grudge match in the basement..." ;)

Kudos to you, my friend, from me and your legion of admirers. It's well deserved. :D

Yo, Magistrate!

Whadday think about the pending appointment of Sanjay Gupta to SG?

I need a dose of Magistrate's Patented Patient Reasoning to tell my why it isn't a bad joke and a VERY BAD sign and indicator of whether or not Obama is the man we thought he was and the man this nation needs him to be.

Ditto for Harry "I blow Mitch MocConnell for dimes because he knows which drawer I have nude photos of little boys in" Reid's slimy toadying to the Bushies in refusing to seat Franken (Burris, at least, makes sense in Reid's Toadying Capitulation).

So, what is your reply to these two events, latest in a long line since Nov. 4th's "victory" that is beginning to seem a bit more like our 2006 "victory that was no victory" every day, though I am not going to judge until I have seen Obama actually govern for at least a year.

Clearly, the Democratic Congress, with very few exceptions, is unchanged and as disgraceful as they ever were.

But what do YOU think? Are you concerned by these events as I am? Do you disagree fully, or with caveats that I might be right (though I am sure we both hope that I am wrong about what these things might mean)?

Lay that Buttery Magistrate Calm Logical Goodness on me, pal!

:hi:

72. Thank You, Sir
I appreciate your comments, particularly as it is no secret we do not always see eye to eye. 'Whole hog' agreement ought not to be a requirement for mutual respect and amicability.

To answer your questions briefly....

Dr. Gupta does not seem to have a particularly sound grasp of public issues elating to delivery of health care. This is not too surprising; working doctors have not demonstrated much grasp of these; indeed, through the history of this debate since the close of WWII, the positions of the A.M.A. have mostly been twaddle. That a man is an expert in repair of automobiles does not make him an expert traffic engineer, and the specialized training required for medical practice necessarily leaves a person without a lot of time or energy to devote intelligently to other fields of expertise. If Dr. Gupta is being picked as an advisor, or a person expected to direct policy, the choice would not be a good one. He is, however, a competent 'talking head', and if he is appointed to work at selling policies President Obama's administration intends to press against opposition from the insurance establishment, and against Republican agitation over 'socialized medicine', then it could prove a sensible choice, as the man is certainly media-savvy, and popular with the public.

Sen. Ried is far from my favorite Democrat, and does not strike me as the person we need in the position of Majority Leader in the Senate. But there are some condition that should be borne in mind. Owing to the broad range of views in any national Democratic caucus, the persons who emerge as internal leaders in our Party tend to be people skilled at mediation and conciliation, and persons with those qualities do not often display alongside them any great capacity for ruthlessness and harshness. The Republicans, being more of a feather in their flockings, are able to select leaders on the basis of fighting spirit, and regularly do so. It is time for Democrats in Congress to grow up, and accept that they are part of a bloc which must act together, even at the cost of some individual discomfiture, for the good of the whole.

A lot will depend on President Obama's skill in rallying the people of the country to him in legislative efforts, so that is clear to legislators, and not only Democratic ones, that the country demands Congress act favorably and speedily on the President's agenda.

You said:

I guess I don't see it quite like that. Certainly what you say is true, but IMHO it is still FAR SECONDARY TO WHAT LEGISLATIVE INTATIVES HE PROPOSES. I mentioned two of my pre-inauguration concerns, and in retrospect I see they were both "appointment related" which doesn't speak as well to my original point/question. So let me choose two legislative examples.

Caveat: this is all M$M speculation and thus should be taken with a grain of salt, but if there's one thing the last 8 years ALSO shows conclusively is that when the M$M reports the Democrats are about to cave or be Bushie-Lite, that almost ALWAYS is what happens.

One could almost say that reporting on Democratic Capitulations is the ONLY thing the Toady M$M is reliable about.

I don't think my disagreement with you, perhaps strong disagreement, on your last point, invalidates your other points.

Having said that two examples of my LEGISLATIVE concerns as it interfaces with Obama and reflects on the disgusting passel of Nancy Pelosi Democrats that now IS the Democratic Party (and I am not speaking of the Left-Right dichotomy, but by the Serves Bushies-Serves America scale), are both involving tax cuts.

Obama is already bending like a reed in his Clintonian "post-partisan" bullshit which we all know the Bushies laugh at with the same gloating contempt for Liberal Weakness that the Nazis did. I will NOT back off on that, it is NOT hyperbole in the least and it is, I believe a very close similarity, if not identical, in this one area (and others, too, but that is a conversation for another day).

First, Obama reportedly is going to let the Bush Tax Cuts go until 2010. Second, Obama is already on his knees before Mitch McConnell (as if the last 8 years never happened) coughing up 40% tax cuts in the name of "compromise".

And WE KNOW what the Bushie idea of compromise is. Norquist told us in a rare moment of honesty: It's Date-rape.

Even if they ARE for the middle and lower class, tax cuts are Bushie Doctrine and DON'T WORK. It was shown during Raygun, Bushler I, and now obviously and undeniably under Bushler II. Yet the Bushies, who regularly revise history and melt/bend reality like mozzarella cheese with their Goebbels v2.0 Propaganda Machine, have done so with that reality, and now EVERYONE accepts as Conventional Wisdom, and now Tax Cuts "worked, have worked, and always will work".

Let me make a point of something I discovered years ago now, that the Bushiganda is as much or more to re-engineer the mind of the Democratic Leadership as it has to re-engineeer the National Mind into neutralized impotence.

This Bushiganda Program, too, has met with great success.

Can you honestly say, after the last eight years (and with a handful of notable exceptions) that you haven't noticed that the Nancy Pelosi Wing of the Democratic Party (which is to say 70-85% of our seated Democratic Congress) despises us with almost as much contempt as the Bushies do?

You think that's an accident, any more than it's an accident that there has been an explosive rise in "Nazi-style absolutist and demonization thinking" the last 28 years and the numbers of Hannidiots and Savage Weiners? (people who are incapable of distinguishing beween "Nazis" and everyone else, basically and a bit metaphorically stated...Good Germans)

Which brings me full-circle to the Caeser/Hitler-level effectiveness of the Bushiganda program, even in manipulating the mind of our so-called "representatives" (who represent the top 0.01% and NO ONE ELSE, with a handful of notable exceptions, IMHO).

Obama is not looking like FDR, so far. Not even close. He is looking, quite frankly (and I am witholding judgement but am very concerned) like Bill Clinton, as I said above.

Which wouldn't be a bad thing at all...if the nation was not under severe authoritarian threat from the Bushies, and our System of Checks and Balances at or near an all-time low of health and vigor. (the threat has not diminished simply because the Bushies had to "let" us win this time or their cover would be fully blown)

But we need better than that now. MUCH better.

Just to let you know, Magistrate, in these last few paragraphs I lapsed into a way of speaking that sounds like I am CERTAIN of these things. Rather than go back and re-edit my entire post with caveats, let me just state that I am certain of NOTHING right now.

I hope I am misreading these signs, but we will find out within a year of Obama is the man we think he is or if he is a Bill Clinton or (which while not a bad guy, is the WRONG guy for this dire situation, metaphorically-speaking) Nancy Pelosi Democrat.

Even without the "sirs" and "ma'ams" his responses are immediately recognizable for the qualities you stated, eloquence, civility, intelligence, patience, and knowledge. I'll lump forgiving and kind in with civility.

His words are always the words of an intelligent grown-up who thinks before he speaks.

And so I'm delighted to give you a K with a side of R.

76. It Was a Great Pleasure For Me as Well, Sir
I miss those times a little on occasion: you are an extraordinarily fair-minded person, and a very sound thinker.

74. I've always thought the Magistrate was Irish...
He can tell you to go to hell in such a way as to make you look forward to the trip!

 I crack myself up... but seriously... I've never had more cordial disagreements or more sincere and kind agreements.

I recently hung this quote on a wall near my desk, and I've thought of The Magistrate more than once when I've read it.

"Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. - Author Unknown

80. +1
I've been around for awhile, so I know what types of threads bring out certain DUers, but the Magistrate is the one whose movements I can never predict...I've seen him calmly putting out huge flamewars, and I've seen him being the single respondent to a an odd post...The fact that he continually keeps his moderator status is a testament to his ability to cut through the static and keep DU's message signal clear -- And he does it without 'vanity' posts or threads that just about every DUer is guilty of at one time or another...

plus, he also makes model planes...how cool is that!

(Aside to my wife, Morgan Freeman: "Is that pretty good sucking-up?" My wife, Morgan Freeman: "I've seen better, but it'll do." Me: "Fine. I'll let it stand.")

To The Magistrate: A Truly Class Act.:toast:
