Buyer's Remorse: Don't Ignore the Great Advice You Can Procure Here on DU

Last week I had the bright idea to register a domain name immediately, which a number of you encouraged me to do. But you cautioned me not to get caught up in one of those web hosting packages, which I did.

I'm happy that I registered the domain names, but sorry I didn't pay close attention to the details of the web hosting arrangement. You were right.

Thanks DU, but despite your warnings, I still screwed myself. Passion eclipsed common sense, and in the heat of the moment I managed to screw myself anyway.

Even though I have no regrets about obtaining these domains, it occurred to me that this is not something I can or wish to act on right now. It's not the right time; it's too early, and I am not certain I even want my name attached to the site or concept. It was meant to be a place for other people to share their feelings without any fear of being judged, but after considering this closely, I'm not ready to do that yet, and it was probably dumb to get suckered into a web hosting package when all I wanted was to register a domain.

The bottom line: If you get inspired to create an internet site, regardless of how intense the passion and belief in your dream, take a deep breath and listen closely to what the folks here at DU who have some experience with this have to say about it.

There are some brilliant people here who have great advice. Don't rush into a situation that costs $120 dollars more than it needs to without sitting down and carefully considering both the logistics and consequences of creating a website that may have very personal content.

But my appreciation to those here at DU who attempted to forewarn me is sincere and deserved by you.

There is great wisdom here on many topics. Unlike me, make use of it.

You don't however, have to let it go entirely to waste.

If you have a web hosting deal you are stuck with anyway, why not do a little "test driving" over the next year or so? Run a blog on the topic(s) you eventually want to provide interactive forums for, and experiment with creating links, seeing what it gets you in re: search engine positioning, etc.

You can even put up a request for people who are sincerely interested in the eventual project to e-mail you, maybe you'll find some gold among the gravel.
