Happy 50th Anniversary Cuba
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7775127.stm
Despite its economic difficulties, Cuba has stuck to its revolutionary ideals of education, welfare and healthcare.

Literacy and infant mortality rates are more in line with the US than Latin America.

Major expansion in higher education means more than half of 18 to 24-year-olds study at university level.

1. Interesting. Son bought me Havana Nocturne by T. J. English for
Christmas. It is about the mob and pre-revolutionary Cuba. I am enjoying it.

11. Not a difficult read, but it has all those names I remember from
my youth, Lansky, Luciano, Genovese, Trafficante, Raft, Sinatra. I did not realize that the Mob influence was a pervasive as it was. They were setting up owning their own nation.

2. Here is a great fact filled thread "Cuba: Before and After the 1959 Revolution"
Much more to Cuba than most Americans could know (seeing that Americans are travel banned by their own gov).

5. One of my earliest memories is listening to the radio when
Castro entered Havana. My family was not wildly pro- or contra- but very interested. I doubt any of them in that kitchen expected that fifty years on, Cuba would be celebrating an anniversary. :)

6. One of my earliest memories in Cuba was listening to Florida radio in Havana.
TV too. It was something that kind of shocked me, I hadn't realized that they could. :dunce:

Believe me, Cubans hear ALL of the frothing-at-the-mouth anti Castro blather gushing out over the airwaves from Miami.

:hi:

7. My parents were frothing at the mouth but my favorite aunt
was delighted.
