17. What is truly sad is how many people fell for it

Bush bought his "ranch" in 1999, one year before the election. Prior to that, it was a pig farm (I'm not kidding). Bush was born in New England. He was educated in New England. He graduated high school, college, and graduate school in New England. He spent his summers at the Bush compound in New England. He was actually in Texas very little growing up, and even when he was he always lived in the suburbs in a posh house with every creature comfort available.

Rove advised him to buy a ranch so he could appear to be more like a "man of the earth", and more Raygunesque. The difference of course, was that Raygun had a ranch many years prior to ever getting in politics and it was actually a working ranch that Raygun built to a large degree himself. Raygun rarely allowed reporters to his ranch. In contrast, Bush's "ranch" was never anything more than a photo op. During the election, he would invite reporters out to his place to film him clearing brush. You could still see the creases in this clothes from them coming right off the shelf without even being washed. I doubt if even Rove realized the extent to which the public would be duped by such a phony display.

Laura Bush hated the "ranch" and never wanted to live there. She still hates it to this day. After the election Bush will be moving right back to the suburbs in a posh Dallas neighborhood. He'll keep his "ranch" until he sells a few books, but then he'll sell everything and move back to New England, just like his dad did.
