Increase the size of your home library by over 1700 books.
Many esoteric volumes at http://www.forgottenbooks.org/catalog/index.php

I just found this and the type is easy to read. Great site and I just wanted to share it with those of us that haven't stumbled on it yet.

Have fun!

3. Awesome. I liked this passaged from the first book:
At the period when these events took place, I had just returned from a scientific research in the disagreeable territory of Nebraska, in the United States.

Jules Verne clearly had done his research for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

5. Scammage
All of these books are long in the public domain...I fail to see what basis forgottenbooks.com has for their copyright claims. Well, I guess they're just trying to make an easy buck.

10. They are public domain.
There are several other copies of these books online here and there, I would imagine they are trying to copyright their "rendition" of the publication. Anyway, they aren't asking for money or email addresses, so I really don't think there's a scam here other than possibly trying to get you to buy a hard copy at Amazon or seeing Google ads while reading.

16. I was looking at the prices of the Amazon print editions
which are pretty hefty, considering that they don't have to pay any author royalties and use the same jacket design for everything.

8. This is why we will possible need a home server of 3 Terabits or more in the future
Your home library is gonna be necessary in the future as we move from a
paper society to a digital society and budget cuts to public libraries will force
them to digitize books, films, classic books and periodicals. Rather than relaying on someone else's site
and the internet, your own server storage will become more important.

20. The good news is text takes up almost no space....
Average novel is <800kb. Say 1MB to make the math easy.

1TB = 1000GB = 1,000,000 MB

1 million books on a drive costing less than $200.

Digital could change a lot of stuff.

15. Project Gutenberg
Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 06:08 PM by mbergen
I was going to mention Project Gutenberg as well. Also I found a great site, that is similar to project Gutenberg, where you can download free audio books to your ipod - I think they may be associated with project Gutenberg - I'm not sure. They are called libravox.org. People volunteer to read chapters.

18. You just had to post this didn't you? I have so many books now that I'm probably going to have
to either give away cherished volumes or build a bigger house. And, since I'm struggling to keep the house I have, I don't see that happening.

This is after (to charities) I gave away somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand books a few years back...

A local charity has a thrift shop which sells hardback books for $1.00 apiece and it is right next to the laundry I patronize once a week... And I'm not likely to resist forgotten books.com any more than I have resisted ebay.

Sigh. Anyone want to volunteer to help me build an extra room on to the house?

37. The best thing about e-books is you don't need a big house...
a large hard drive maybe but unless you print them out you can live in a cubby and have thousands of books. :)

I must admit though.. as much as I'll enjoy these sites.. I have a thing about old fashioned paper type books I can carry around. :)

40. To all that have posted in this thread:
Thank you for proving what a great and bright group we have here by kicking this post and all the wonderful replies (I was beginning to feel we couldn't have an "all positive thread).

This speaks volumes as to the sort of base we have here. Esoteric, educated, bright and still curious to learn and experience new things.

Kudos, DUers!
