KABUL, Afghanistan - A NATO airstrike destroyed a Taliban command post in southern Afghanistan, killing a suspected senior militant leader, the alliance said Friday. Separately, an assailant gunned down an Afghan lawmaker who, under the former Taliban regime, oversaw the destruction of two Buddha statues carved into a cliff.

3. why did no one stop them from destroying those beautiful buddhas?
The world should be ashamed (even tho Buddhists prolly laughed over it---but I'm not that evolved!)

4. Sure.
The irony is that Buddhists would be more upset about the killing of this Taliban leader than the destruction of any old statue.

8. They are being rebuilt
believe it or not. Sensible Afghans know it's a picture of their past, set into stone.

The one group in this world that didn't blow a gasket over those statues were the Buddhists. Buddha was an ordinary man, and statues aren't worshiped.
