23. Still a hero of the right.
If you want to have some fun, get a righty drunk and start a conversation by saying, "You know, I don't agree with what Tim McVeigh did, but I can kinda understand where he was coming from." Then sit back and enjoy the response. See how long you can listen with a straight face.

28. Truth be known, there aren't THAT many of them who are uncomfortable with what TM did.
Look at it; it's the same logic that's behind the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq. There just are lots of people who cannot see the value of things unless suffering, pain, death, and destruction are involved. Many (most?) of them call themselves "Christians" and if you ask them (and I have) what about Innocent Iraqis (or Innocent Palestinians) they give you some shit about "God's Will". For these people, the New Testament NEVER happened.

36. If God is by your side, who can possibly stand against you?
There is really no need to try and reason with those who use religion to justify hate, bigotry, violence, or indifference to those less fortunate. They aren't reasonable people to begin with. The only need is that they be marginalized and ridiculed both politically and socially at every given opportunity. It's exactly what they deserve.

By now the little mullet boy has experienced puberty and the last thing he's thinkin about is jeebus.

Of course the lady that runs the place is probably just as nutty as ever. SHE is probably still fantasizing about jeebus doing unspeakable things to her.

34. They ARE Blasphemers and if they get their way they will produce more WEAK "Christians"
Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 10:50 AM by patrice
not Real Christians. Look at the works of Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo; they're research subjects were QUITE likely "Christians" - what Milgram & Zimbardo did explains much about the Invasion & Occupation of Iraq.

These people are sooooooooo against Government, that is, until their Government tells them to KILL. They support that with fevered eagerness: "God's" Warriors are BLASPHEMERS. If Christianity submits to them it will get weaker and weaker and weaker, until it collapses just like the Soviet Union.

18. I know what you mean.
I got it from Netflix a couple of years ago. I cried during parts of it.

I did not warn my husband how hard it was to watch. He was devastated.

The little blond boy got to me. I think it is because my son looked like him when he was small. He was a sensitive kid, too.

My kids went to church camp. They loved every minute of it. They told me that they have had some of their strongest spiritual experiences at that camp. It was the camp my husband attended when he was a boy. I worked as a cook there one summer. It is a wonderful place, run by compassionate people who love children.

19. Growing up Southern Baptist, I went to church camp every summer
until I was in high school. Everyone did. We went to the mountains in NC to a huge camp there with large buildings and chapels. It was a heartwarming and loving experience. I doubt it is that way today.

We went on trips to the beach for picnics, and the pastors took their water skiing boats and we all water skiied. It was community, and it was welcoming.

That's what makes watching this movie so hard....what used to be.

22. Jesus was a pacifist who advocated the rich giving to the poor
What you describe still exists. I don't think it's fair to say the behavior demonstrated in the documentary is indicative of all Christians. What I have observed is the most hard core Christers are those who are "born again". In other words, they participated in a lot of sinful activities earlier in life that they feel guilty for, and the only thing that keeps them on the straight and narrow is strict Christian fundamentalism. Typically they force their warped ideas on their children with the expectation it will keep them from "making the same mistakes." The reality is quite often the reverse of their intentions. In extreme cases they even use fundamentalism to hide the most extreme perversions like incest, pedophilia, bestiality, and necrophilia. You see some of this in hard core groups similar to the Branch Dividians and FLDS. So long as you can justify your perversions by saying God told you to do it, who can argue? Certainly not the political right.

35. Unfortunately..
one of those who is the most hardcore is head of the Southern Baptist seminary. He was a nice guy who became a victim of the church's takeover. He is anti-birth control, thinks people must have children to please God, anti-gay, thinks women must submit to their husbands.

He says "This contraceptive mentality is an insidious attack upon God's glory in creation, and the Creator's gift of procreation to the married couple.".

37. There is no nut like a religious nut
I can almost empathize with those who are against abortion from a moral standpoint. However when you get right down to it, is anyone actually FOR more abortions? The problem I have is the methods many of them employ simply guarantee there will be more abortions. Many of the same people on the right are against all alternatives. They are against teaching sex ed in school, making contraception widely available, providing social programs to the poor outside of the church, or anything else that has proven to be effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies. Instead they favor methods that have been proven NOT to work, denying access to contraception in all forms, and even denying basic health care in areas where infant mortality is as high as the worst 3rd world countries. If that's not truly evil, I'm not sure what is. There's too many who confuse religion with morality. They aren't the same thing and neither guarantees the other.

Now, so many of that old group (including the in-laws) have devolved into borderline fundy-ism, and the only church wifey goes to is the nursing home chapel services with her 93 year old mom. I still am an non believer, and we've been married one month short of 41 years.

given their enchantment with Power and DEATH, what kind of answers do you think they're going to come up with when a judgement call is needed in the care of those who have no advocates, or uncaring advocates? There are many uses of morphine that are completely legal under medical supervision and publicly justifiable, especially in financial systems that are under strain from increased numbers of people (Boomers) diagnosed with Dementia in the system. Look at growth in the Hospice INDUSTRY. What we are looking at in this movie will be the leaders of one of the FEW growth BUSINESS enterprises there is.

It's time for "Pro-Life" to get HONEST.

21. I started to watch
But got about ten minutes in and had to stop. When it comes to fundies and their sheer hypocrisy, I can't keep it inside. I think I watched until the smirking woman got up at the end of the children's dance number and was telling people to go buy something from the store.

It's a mess--our country is getting more and more fanatical, and they are influencing many would never have found themseles in such a trap before. It's sad, but unless some of this could be turned around, I'd feel hopeful we, as a nation, could make it. But I don't think that as much right now.

32. They hate smart people
pretty much is what that means.
it's a jocks' only kinda thing.
You know, those muscle heads from high school, complete fucking morons, but all the girls wanted them?
Then they leave HS/ college - their foolball skills worth dick-all, and they have the 'nerds' because they actually went to school to LEARN!
that's the mentality of that poor boy's asshole parents.
the fear of the smart.

Joshua ben Joseph of Nazareth was a good, kind and smart man. His ideas were far ahead of his time - the way he said them - yet very typical of the stories of the "old testament".

People like these morans like to ignore/forget that he was a RABBI, and had a VERY intimate understanding of the Torah, and understood it's lessons very well. The old testament, when taken as allegories, fables, and stories (most Jews understand it's not a LITERAL word of god, but allagories of what happened to people, and explainations of how we got here) about the world around them, and what they saw.

While not Illiad-level accurate, it was a reasonable oral history, for some parts. Most of it was a larger story meant to convey that forgiveness nad kindness work out in teh end. That faith to god above all else is important, and that you need to express that faith while being good and charitable to others. That forgiveness is god's real gift to humanity.

The free will not only to act evil, but the free will to forgive evil if repented - story of Joseph and his Technicolor coat ;) was about forgiveness and using the talents you are born with. About accepting those tho are smarter and different (david). About loving your brothers (his sob brothers who sold him into slavery) and taking care of your family because they ARE family.

what these people worship has nothing to do with the bible, or any testaments. they ARE the pharisees we were warned about in the gospels.

"Dear god, Jesus, whomever... please protect me from your fan club. A-men."
