Yesterday, on ABC Wolrd News, I had to chuckle
Charlie Gibson ended the program wishing a good evening and all the other euphemism and finally simply said "Merry Christmas." This was OK. After all, last night was Christmas Eve.

Then they let all their producers, and camera and sound people, and writers make their wishes. Every single one of them wished Happy Holidays. One of them, from Iraq, I think, even said: Happy Holidays to all, and to all a Good Night.

Oh, c'mon. This was Christmas Eve, you could say Merry Christmas.

1. Nothing celebrates 'Christmas' better than getting a good hate on about what other people say.

2. feeding the demon, ravenous for red meat
the big lie, that our western cultural heritage (ie Xmas, Easter, kiddy porn etc) is under attack, from enemies who rely on liberal socialist types to stab the good in the back, just like we did Germany when hitler etc rode to the rescue (thus fascism is our fault too). Playacting 'victim' of political correctness is specialty of pigmedia goons like gibson and soon....and inspires outrage from bill orally and rush limbah-humbug, the war hero and famed patriot, who fill the news media with it until it's accepted as the plain truth

4. No more public tree in my neighborhood. We have white plastic topiary instead.
I want the tree back! I want greenery!

3. The other day shopping the cashier told a customer Happy Holidays & she started bitching
I was right behind her in line. She went on and on at him about how terrible it was he "had" to say Happy Holidays because Merry Christmas "might offend someone." Then she leaves, saying in an oddly bitter voice, "Well Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."

And as she turned to leave, I told her "Ma'am, I deeply offended by you saying 'Happy New Year'."

She laughed and assumed I was laughing with her. But at least I put a smile on her face. That's more than Fox News can say.

8. Hmmm... Ramadan is just over, Haunukka is in progress, Kwanza is less
than a week away, and News Year's Eve/Day is also a week away. And I almost forgot Winter Solstice and Mid-Winter Festival.

Thanksgiving is generally considered the beginning of the Holiday Period, with Christmas coming toward, but not at, the end.

Christmas is only ONE holiday out of the eight that I can think of this time of year.

So what's wrong with wishing everyone, regardless of their religion (or lack thereof), Happy Holidays?

Merry Christmas is sooo exclusionary.

10. Agree that Happy Holidays should be used between Thanksgiving and New Year
But I don't have any problems with wishing Merry Christmas on Christmas Eve. Especially when the ones wishing Happy Holidays really had to struggle with this phrase.

11. Our clinic had been handing out donated gift bags to patients
Still couldn't bring myself to say "Merry Xmas" even though they were red and green and obviously meant for Xmas...so I would hand them the bag with a "Happy Holidays!!".

Mainly because I am UU and want to make every effort to remember that there are many holidays celebrated around this time of year.

But also:

From my "NEVER make assumptions about people's beliefs" category:

Several years ago I worked in a NICU and there were some donated/home made crib sheets that had Halloween characters. The nurses had used some of those sheets when changing the babies' cribs the night before Halloween. Innocent enough, right? It's just Halloween ghosts and goblins
Wrong. We had a baby's parents come in and get pretty livid..they didn't recognize or approve of Halloween as a holiday and were none to happy to see their baby's bed adorned with Halloween characters. The bed linen had to be changed.
