It's comin' on Christmas...
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 08:00 PM by Old Crusoe

"It's comin' on Christmas
They're cuttin' down trees
They're puttin' up reindeer
Singin' songs of joy and peace

O I wish I had a river
I could skate away on..."

Joni Mitchell. "River"

1. Thanks OC, for that.
It's not well known as a Christmas song but I adore it. James Taylor does awesome version on his Christmas album. :hugs: :hugs:

4. I knew Taylor is doing guitar on Joni's original but have yet to hear his
own recording.

It's a fine composition.

I note your Bears insignia and want to wish them all the best tomorrow against Green Bay.

5. now marmar, don't make me call the Mayor.
The mayor I mean is the mayor of Thalia, Texas, in Larry McMurty'rs novel THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.

Two young folks, Dwayne and Sonny, are fighting like cats and dogs on December 24th as the town gathers for its holiday party.

The boys are fighting over the affections of a girl.

Noting the dust-up, the mayor steps over and tells them, "Now you boys cut this shit out. It's CHRISTMAS!"

6. Hey there, FLDem5.
That song spoke to me early and deep and I've never forgotten it. Actually that whole album is "in my blood like holy wine," to rip off another of its tunes.

Hope you're well down your way.

14. I'm sorry. That can make it very hard. I'm all out of miracle
solutions, but maybe you can pick a day off and slip over to the beach. I know it's The Season down there, but the Gulf can be so restorative.

10. Hi, Carolina. It's one of those compositions that is already
splendid as it is but which gets even better when Mitchell steps up to the mike.

LOL! True. Sad and true both.
I am still emotionally upended by the way Mitchell wrote and performed that album.

If anybody is a cosmic shape-shifter in this universe, it has to be Joni Mitchell.

It was a little more abstracted and overthought and thorny, just like I like things.

22. Hearing both those recordings, I felt like I had stumbled into the
Lost Boys' underground treehouse. Tink and the lads had the coolest stuff lying around, too.

Well, not one to squander an opportunity like that, I did the dishes and ran the sweeper, and when they finally came back from the Pirate adventure, they said I could stay.

And that's where I've been ever since.

FOR THE ROSES is a marvel, too. Agree with you that it's different in tone.

I especially like "...but it passes like the summer / I'm a wild seed again / Let the wind carry me."

Holy god how does she do that?

It's a nice little space to click into as DUers take up the fiddle and the drum and march against each other.

Merry Christmas and all that, OC.

She did a great job on that album, but that producer, that David Crosby guy -- he'll never amount to much, that's for sure.

NIGHT RIDE HOME ought to have done better than it did commercially -- it's awfully good. I really do like it note for note.

That's one of the two Christmas songs that I can say I still enjoy after all these years. The other is "So This is Christmas," John Lennon. As for the rest of them - bah, humbug.

Once in a while a good one slips in there, but most of them are pretty lame.
