Rick Warren's friends just asked the CA Sup. Ct. to nullify the marriages of 18,000 gay couples
John Aravosis (DC) · 12/20/2008 10:00:00 AM ET ·

Great timing, Ricky. It's as if Warren and his buddy's want to ruin Obama's inauguration.

The sponsors of Proposition 8 asked the California Supreme Court on Friday to nullify the marriages of the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who exchanged vows before voters approved the ballot initiative that outlawed gay unions.

The Yes on 8 campaign filed a brief arguing that because the new law holds that only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized or valid in California, the state can no longer recognize the existing same-sex unions.

"Proposition 8's brevity is matched by its clarity. There are no conditional clauses, exceptions, exemptions or exclusions," reads the brief co-written by Pepperdine University law school dean Kenneth Starr, the former independent counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton.

3. Both. Both are despicable. And Obama is refusing to remove this bigot-homophobe -
Says a lot about Obama. Wish I'd seen this part of him before, but I guess during campaigns politicians don't out themselves fully.

7. You knew he was a member of a relatively conservative Christian church, did you not?
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 10:40 AM by slackmaster
Surely you didn't believe the RW lies that he was a closet Muslim.

You did hear what he had to say about same-sex marriage during the campaign, didn't you?

This is one issue where Obama's attitude needs some adjustment. I knew that, and I think you probably did too.

I don't agree with him on everything, and probably never will. I don't need to agree with him on everything in order to support and respect him, or to vote for him.

9. A lot of churches have gone the way of bigotry. I just ahd no idea he would UPHOLD IT
by selecting a complete pig of a preacher. The entire country is not filled with pigs like this one who fight against civil rights for women and gays, and ask their congregations to VOTE Republican.

As far as I'm concerned, Obama is half-Republican. Not the change he got us to campaign for him on. I will not go down that road again.

10. We know he's half white
Maybe he is half Republican too.

Not the change he got us to campaign for him on. I will not go down that road again.

As a grizzled, jaded politico I recommend that you wait until you see what alternatives are available before making that decision. But I hope you are happy with whatever choice you make.

5. Good! They really are shooting themselves in the foot with this one.
This will be the thing that has people pulling away their support for Prop H8 in droves. What decent human being would want to rip 18,000 families asunder?

So, let's not throw away that position by making a saint out of RW.

13. Except Starr is not the lawyer
He won't be arguing the pro-Prop 8 side, Jerry Brown will. And Jerry just doesn't see how he can come up with any argument for it.

15. This is why keeping silent or just accepting is counterproductive
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 01:02 PM by lunatica
While many DUers are wishing that the pro-gay and the gay community would 'get over it' or just bide their time, or wait till the next elections or just simply STFU, the Warren's are busy trying to cement their frail victory.

So should we all just wait for a better opportunity to make the case for universal civil rights?

No thanks. Can anyone think of a better opportunity than right this minute under these circumstances?

19. I'm talking about the dismissive response, common in these parts,
that gay equality is a "pet issue" and those who insist on it are "whiny."

20. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were the first couple to be married in San Francisco
They were a lesbian couple who were together 50 years. Look up these two amazing women online sometime. We in the GLBT community cannot owe these women enough respect. We cannot honor these women enough. They were working for our rights, for our equality, before a lot of us were born. In a time when being out as gay and lesbian could destroy your life.

Del Martin passed away this year. After, finally, happily, joyously they benefited from the California Supreme Court's ruling. And got married.

And now that marriage may be nullified.

I can't possibly hate the bigots enough. I can't possibly summon enough hate of these intolerant bigots.
