It's not even frickin' winter yet
and already my son's lost so many school days that he'd be in school until mid-July except I just heard our state legislature is considering making a variance to the 180-day-rule for this year, allowing to get out more or less on time. Already they've cancelled enough school for the year, and it's not even frickin' winter yet (technically). Living in Northern New England.

I've already spent a week without power, and goodness knows how many accidents there will be tonight, and my wife will have a 45 minute drive back from work (hoping the worst of it will be over by then). Conditions are sleet/snow/ice, some of the worst driving conditions no matter what you have for a vehicle (we run a Saab with the best snow tires we can buy, but that's no guarantee that some other idiot that isn't properly equipped or can't drive won't plow into YOU).

This weather is just whacked.

7. Thirty inches of snow here in Western Michigan the month of December.
Ten more expected between now and Tuesday, just a crazy month.

13. Mom just called from Western Lower Michigan.
She told me to cancel my flight plans for Sunday.

They're expecting another blizzard, and she's 45 miles north of the airport about 10 miles off the lake. If, and it's a big if, the plane managed to get out of Detroit, it is not assured a safe landing at the airport. If the plane should land at the airport, it is unlikely that anyone would be able to meet me because the highways will be closed. I might end up spending Christmas all alone at the Comfort Inn, then waiting for the weather to clear to take off for Detroit, etc.

My uncle said that I should stay put. He went into the ditch yesterday and his neighbor pulled him out.

Here in D.C. we're expecting freezing rain on Sunday a.m., so I wasn't too keen on flying anyway.

15. Same to you!
I hope that the Lake Effect won't be too bad in your area.

At least you'll get a white Christmas!

Hart, here, by the way.

9. At the opposite end of the spectrum - our temp was in the 70s today

I totally agree that this weather is just whacked.

It's hard to really feel like its Christmas when you're running around in short sleeved t-shirts and you have had the air conditioning on in the house for the past two days. I think I've forgotten what snow looks like.

I'll trade for a while with you :)

10. In western WI we just had our 2nd school snow day so they will have at least 1 to make up.
I think there are more snow days than there used to be because so many students are bussed now and travel on rural roads. Winter storms are really the worst thing we get here where I live and snow and subzero cold are just the way it is living in WI. You simply stay off the roads and stay inside. I have lived here for over 50 years and never remember having lost power in the winter although the power went off for a half hour last summer. I haven't had snow tires on any car since the early 1970s, but my present car rides so low that they wouldn't make much difference now.

16. Spoke with a relative in Austin..they had record high AND record low...within 10 hours
One day last week. Record high (70+ degrees) was reached at noon...by 9 or 10 pm it was snowing with a record low temp.

This week in Dallas we have had sleet, some areas had snow, horrible fog with misty rain, and then on Friday it was sunny in the 70's ("what is that big orange, blinding ball in the sky????")!! Today the cold front is back (20's tonight). BUT, Xmas day temp is supposed to be in the 70's again! :-)

17. It is 7 7 degrees here on the coast.
The forecast for tomorrow is 58 with showers and winds of 20-30 mph. Back to 72 degrees by Wednesday. Global warming I guess.

18. Fellow New Englander here
It's hard to fathom anyone having to go this long without electricity in the winter.

We lost power (from the ice storm) around midnight Thursday of last week and got it back this past Sunday morning.

The marine batteries hooked up to the pellet stove died after 12 hours.

The generator ran for 20 minutes and then died.

We had to hook up a power inverter to the Escape and let it run for three days in the driveway just for heat and to keep the fridge cold....

Our town is out of money just from that one storm (I live in the Hilltowns of Western Mass). We'll be lucky if the Highway Department even gets around to plowing the roads the rest of the winter...

You're right...it's just crazy....

PS...I hope you get power soon!
