Poll question: Reasons People Post and Don't Look at the Responses
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 06:30 PM by Mike 03
Over the past couple of weeks, there have been some polls about why people post and don't continue to particpate or stay engaged with the threads, and some of them have discussed all sorts of negative reasons, such as being a troll or manipulating people here, but my question is about fear.

Does anyone here write posts out of conviction, but just feel afraid to check the responses, for whatever reason? Insecurity, or fear of disappointing people with what you said? Or something else?

3. Sometimes I'm taken away from the computer by real life for long periods of time
after posting. So I'm unaware of the responses.

4. Other(s)
1. I don't spend all my time on DU, so I might post something and not be aware for some time that someone has responded. At that time, it seems silly to re-reply.

2. Sometimes, I don't want to read the predictable idiocy I'll find in replies.

3. That bugs the idiots in 2.

5. Usually, a reply means I hit a nerve
so I let them vent their spleen and move on.

6. At times the boss gets pissed off, yelling that I'm letting D.U. interfere
with my air traffic control duties, what a square.

7. It depends on the response.
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 06:47 PM by TexasObserver
There are many responses I don't consider worthy of response, so I don't respond.

Also, I tend to disengage after 3-4 exchanges with the same poster. What's the point of one of those long sub thread that says nothing but "did too! did not!"? It's like two kids sitting in the backseat of the car, arguing about who is taking up more than their half.

If I determine that a poster is simply one of those who likes to be a brat, I tend to cut them loose, or ignore most of their responses. If you don't feed them, they'll have to move on and try to pick a fight with someone else.

Just because I give my opinion on a topic, that doesn't mean I want to talk to anyone who shows up to reply to my post. If I'm at a function, and some jackass walks up and attempts to enter my conversation with an insult, I literally turn my back on them and ignore them. Sometimes no response is the best response.

8. Are you talking about posting, or starting threads?
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 06:53 PM by TexasObserver
If you're talking about starting threads, that's a different matter.

First, I tend not to start threads, because DAYAM! Aren't there already at least 5 threads on every conceivable topic (not counting the "My Take On ________" threads, which I always immediately put on HIDE THREAD).

Second, if I did start a thread, I still would not be compelled to everyone who responds. If someone shows up who always makes some snide remark, why even acknowledge it? Why not ignore them? They'll go away, because tacky conflicts are the sun and water of their growth. Deny them the response, and you deny them the life blood they need to post. Like ants encountering poison, they'll move to your neighbor's lawn.

don't post much, been here since 1997. Have had my bad nights where I take on people, but this site use to me much more kind and informative. I am so sorry to say that but people here were much more kind. See I did it again, now I bet a bunch of posters want to give me what for.

10. Other
This forum is not set up to make it easy to go back to different threads where one has posted. Or, I haven't found out a way to go back and check each thread - when I have posted in more than one (which is what I usually do).

11. I get accused of trollery pretty often
I suppose when it comes to that sort of thing it's best to examine your own motives and not spend a lot of time worrying about what other people think of you.
