Meet my new Senator.
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 11:12 AM by ccharles000
Kay Hagan

Hagan defeated first-term Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole in the 2008 United States Senate election. She will be the second female senator from the state of North Carolina, as well as the first female Democrat to represent the state in the Senate. She is also the first woman to defeat a female incumbent in a Senate election, and her election made North Carolina the first state to have elected female senators from more than one political party.

Hagan's victory returned Jesse Helms's former Senate seat to the Democrats; Helms held the seat from 1973 until Dole won in the 2002 election. Ironically, Helms had won largely by dominating the eastern part of the state, a region Hagan dominated in 2008 as mentioned above. It also means that North Carolina will have two Senators from the Piedmont Triad; soon-to-be senior Senator Richard Burr is from Winston-Salem.

1. I expect great things from her.
I think she's going to be an outstanding Democratic Senator!

2. Meet my crappy senator
Bob Corker

Corker defeated Harold Ford Jr. by a mere 3 percent in a solidly "red" state by using dog whistle advertisements alluding to the fact that Ford Jr. is black. Corker's use of jungle drums and white women who may run off with men of color will be immortalized as prime examples of subliminal advertising.

Corker will be flogged by Saturn Plant employees for consistently deriding their pay, their livelihood and their product during the recent automobile industry LOAN (as opposed to bailout) talks. If the millionaire-businessman Corker succeeds in bringing down the UAW, he likely will be tarred and feathered by industry workers throughout the country - including the foreign companies in Tennessee who will no doubt suffer as a result of any future Big 3 bankrupcy - and hopefully thrown over for a Democrat in 2010.

4. Maybe some North Carolinians can come next door
and tell us how well voting Democratic has done for them. If Tennesseans hear it from neighbors they trust, they may just throw off the RusHanniSavaBoortz shackles which bind them to a bankrupt party.

6. Yesssss!
And my new Senator is Jeff Merkley, who ousted Gordon "Pondkiller" Smith in a tight race. If Oregon hadn't gotten rid of Smith this time around, he probably would have been senator for life.

Good to remember that Democrats actually had a pretty good election in 2008, despite what the popular media keep trying to tell us.

Just kidding. I'm glad Kay won--especially in the face of those despicable ads Liddy Dole ran against her.
