Obama Cabinet Is Shy on Southerners, Republicans

Obama Cabinet Is Shy on Southerners, Republicans (Update1)
By Hans Nichols and Julianna Goldman

Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama has moved faster than any modern president-elect in selecting his Cabinet, scouring Wall Street, academia and the Senate to assemble a diverse team that has won bipartisan praise.

“He has every basic entity within his government,” said U.S. Representative David Scott, a Georgia Democrat. “He’s got Jewish people, he’s got Protestants, he’s got white, black, you name it.”

Republicans including Arizona Senator John McCain, Obama’s opponent in the presidential election, also have applauded his choices.

Still, the Democrat’s star-studded roster lacks representatives from two groups: Southerners and the Republicans that he vowed to appoint during the campaign.

Forty-two days since winning the presidency, Obama has picked 11 members of his Cabinet and 11 senior White House aides. That’s more than twice the number named by Bill Clinton at this point in his transition to the presidency. It also puts Obama ahead of former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, according to the White House Transition Project.

The appointment yesterday of Nobel laureate Steven Chu to head the Department of Energy kicked off a week in which Obama plans to fill the remainder of his Cabinet. He also announced Lisa Jackson -- who has largely spent her career in New Jersey, even though she was born in New Orleans -- as his choice to head the Environmental Protection Agency. .......(more)

19. Didn't you hear, if you went on Obama's administration as a Republican,
you had to turn in your Republican card so you can get screamed at by Rush, Billo and Hannity...

25. There are more GOPers than Southerners. Gates is Pappy's guy
so he qualifies as Pug. He also has one of the top 3 jobs. I am personally very disappointed in some of Obama's appointments and especially his apparent disregard for Dean's 50 state policy. Illinois and Chicago certainly have their fair share. And as to the South, Bill Clinton and Al Gore are both Southerners, as is Carter. So the South has done okay by the Democratic Party; we should not be ignored. In fact with all the talk about Lincoln; Lincoln was in fact a Southerner. He was born in Kentucky, and the state is doing a lot this year to commemmorate his birth and his legacy. The anti-South and anti-Hillary leanings of many DUers is unfair and uncalled for. So as I have repeatedly requested, just stop it. There are multitudinous good dems in the South, fighting hard every day to bring about change.
