To all of the cheap labor pretenders here, thanks for paying for my food stamps, unemployment
housing subsidy, SSDI (because I AM going to claim permanent disability) all because you support crushing the American Labor movement. Let's see how you feel about supporting me for the rest of my life while you drive around in your Japanese cars.

and I don't support cheap labor just because I drive a 10 year old Suburu that I bought second hand.

96. You are out of line with your rationale. It's offensive.
I'm a state employee, 20+ year Union worker and Steward. To support the UAW and the US, my first (5-6) cars were American made. My last 2 purchases were Toyotas because I could not justify making the purchase that suited my needs in the American car industry. I recently bought a Prius. They don't make 'em in the States. I always read the reliability ratings and overviews in Consumer Reports and realized that the value in my Toyotas was much, much better. Sure I felt a little guilty about it, but I make State worker income and I feel like I need to be smart about large purchases. Plus, I don't spend money in dollar stores, Walmart or any other shop that is primarily sweat shop labor. I do the best I can to support American jobs.

Tell me, Mr. OP, do you buy any widgets made in China and does that make you a cheap labor pretender?

98. I have NEVER owned anything but Domestic cars, buy UNION made clothes
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 01:38 PM by DainBramaged
for work (I'd give you the link, but I don't think it matters to you) DON'T shop Wal-Mart, DO use Verizon (union) for my home phone and AT&T (Union) for my wireless. I do EVERYTHING I can to NOT buy from China, and unlike you, didn't turn my back on the Union to buy an Imported Japanese car BANKROLLED and subsidized by the Japanese government because I though it would give me "eco-cred".

I have nothing to be ashamed of, but I wouldn't say the same about you. And you as a State employed Union worker offend me. You should take the same pay cut we're being asked to take.

I just thought, are you the guy with the red flag I see with the (usually) crew of about eight standing around doing nothing when you decide to close down a traffic lane to fix a pothle in your boss' driveway?

Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 04:00 PM by joeunderdog
I have corrected anyone referencing the inflated UAW hourly wage rumor and called attention to CEO pay. I have demanded an explanation why the banks and insurance companies weren't held to the same scrutiny as the UAW. And I called bullshit when the workers got blamed for the deal not happening. I wrote my editorial in support of the big 3. I'm not your problem; I'm your brother in a different union. DSo dn't shit where you eat.

All you do is offer insults to anyone who doesn't live their lives exactly the way you want them to. If you want to blast people, go to Free Republic. WTF?

80. Well not being an isolationist, I welcome their trade
After all that gives them plenty of dollars to help prop up our currency, and buy our products and services.

In fact Japan is one of my company's biggest customers - so they end up sending that money right back to the people who pay me anyway.

None of which changes the fact that the vast majority of the money stays in the US - direct costs are far and away the largest part of car manufacturing, at least for basic sedans, but alsoo in general (flashy SUVs and exotica are an exception).

Plus I get a car where the transmission won't fail at 70K( I love people preaching JD Power surveys on INITIAL quality to argue a question of reliability by the way) and, more impotantly given my tendency to trade cars in frequently, far more resale value than a comparable GM or Ford.

95. Or you could think of
the $63B we DO export to Japan (note - the larger number for imports from them is not really the issue so cannot be used as refutation. We are a technical/service economy more than a durable goods manufacturing one (while we certainly sell plenty of those too).

I'm not so micro as to worry about whether it has to be cars instead of chemicals. Japan has to spend those dollars somewhere, and this is far from just a one to one relationship. Japan may send some of those dollars to Saudi Arabia for oil, but they in turn may use those dollars to buy drilling equipment and oilfield housing from us (not an assumption - I once interviewed for a job at a large company that sold those things all over the world) or far more convoluted trades too. It's not something that can be managed or even understood on a Japanesae car for US car basis.

So instead of paying for "lazy, overpaid workers" who actually work and make products vital to our economic viability, he'll be paying for them to really NOT work. Now they'll be on government assistance, and he'll be paying for them directly. Nice work, GOP. You're all a bunch of stupid, selfish idiots.

in Japanese cars if American cars were dependable, durable, and fuel efficient. I was still a defender of American cars until a piece flew off my 2007 Saturn Ion this Tuesday while I was driving the Beeline (I refuse to call it the Beachline). A fucking 2007 Saturn that I purchased new...I even waited 2 months to have it built because they didn't already have one around that had the features I wanted. What the hell?

I'm all for the Amercian worker, but why the fuck shouild I support giving a crutch to these companies so they can continue to make shitty products? Aren't we just postponing the collapse by a year or two if they don't completely overhaul their products?

when I was a teen ager.

Monster gas guzzler but it was bullet proof.
I beat the shit out of that car and it just kept going.
... betcha didn't know Cad's were really off road vehicles ...

Later in life I owned a Chevy and a Ford - both made in the late 80's and both absolute piles of crap.
Cheaply made and with stuff constantly breaking.

Now I own a Toyota that already has more miles on it than both my Ranger and my Malibu combined... and no major problems.
plus I get way better mileage.

24. I had a 66' Chrysler Newport
It was an indestructible tank.

I had a 1989 Jeep Cherokee that wouldn't stay running. One day the roof rack tore off while I was driving 40-45 mph with a large box strapped to the top. The mechanic I took it to said "These roof racks are only for show." Now there's Amercian ingenuity. I got rid of it as soon as I didn't need an SUV anymore.

When I worked for the State of FL, the fleet vehicles were Fords (until they started buying Toyota hybrids). The transmissions usually started slipping around 55-60K miles and the cars were totally useless by 100K. Now there's something worth suppoting...

84. I have...
I drove lots of Fords as fleet cars for the State of Florida. Both late 90's models and early-to-mid 2000's models. The transmissions started slipping in all cars around 55-60K miles and were pretty much undriveable pieces of shit by 100K. That's why the State of Florida started buying Toyotas for their fleets. Fords suck. Isn't it interseting how Ford suddenly doesn't need the money? Almost like they never did, but were more than willing to stand there with their hands out just in case someone was willing to drop some cash into them. Sounds pretty shitty, but I suppose I should support that kind of behavior by purchasing one of their crappy vehicles.

And please don't tell me you drive a Ford truck. All I ever see are idiots driving Ford pickup trucks...never actually hauling anything, most of them don't even have a trailer hitch.....just a stupid truck. Yeee-haww, pardner!

103. no problem with reality
my Toyota gets is still getting ~45mpg per tank and I've got 110k miles on it.
The most costly 'repair' I've made is buying tires.

Nothing has broken...
no busted door handles - the trunk still closes - the transmission isn't slipping
I haven't had to use duct tape on it anyplace so far.

none of the rest of us will even be asking for a bail out for our jobs. And I actually have to buy inteligently in order to afford things like a car - skip the house as I can't come up with 20% down with a salary like most that doesn't keep up with inflation and salary freezes off and on for years, and a 401K that is sinking as a pension.

Whats makes you special? I hope someone is around to pay for the rest of our retirments since we will be paying for you - and I think we should have safety nets and don't begrudge paying disability to those who are disabled.

So much for discussion on a discussion board like DU. My experience here is that i learn more by exchanging posts with people whom I don't agree with rather than posting more "Me, too" and "I hate Repubs more than you do" posts. (I do understand that some posters already know everything and have no need to learn anything new. ;) )

I realize this post will earn me the dreaded "click" (if I'm not on "ignore" already"), but perhaps that is a badge of honor. There will still be plenty of posters here who will exchange posts in an open manner.

100. Exactly.
If we had universal health care, I doubt we'd be talking about a bailout for these companies. It would help us all and I don't get why EVERYONE can't see that.

As for buying American cars, well, I've had enough experience with state vehicles (which are Dodges, Fords and Chevys) to know that I at least never want a Dodge, especially a truck, because those ARE giant pieces of shit. We put over $3000 on one truck alone in the last two years. It only has 84K miles on it or we would get rid of it. ALL of our Dodge trucks, agency-wide, have more repairs and more expensive repairs than any other. So of course we started buying other things. I can't say yet whether Fords and Chevys are better.

Is a "cheap labor pretender"? We're crushing the labor movement? Hmm, tell you what, let me go back to the two shops that I unionized, driving my Honda, and check with them to see how much of a "cheap labor pretender" I am.

You do realize that there are thousands upon thousands of union members who drive foreign cars. Are they "cheap labor pretenders"?

Your contention that somebody who doesn't by a Big 3 car doesn't support labor is utter bullshit. But hey, you've got anybody who disagrees with you on ignore so that you can live in your own little smug self reinforcing bubble. Hmm, who does that remind me of? Oh, yeah, those folks who reside on the right :eyes:

40. About as much as this does....
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the President his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

:hi:

61. Looked in a mirror lately?
The first computer I built was all American made parts. Of course that was in 1977. If I could FIND American made parts to build one, I would. And Michael Dell pretty much treats his peons like a third world company. I won't buy a Dell for personal reasons-just like you evidently won't buy a Japanese car. But some people do and I don't hold that against them.

97. Actually, Dell still assembles all thier US bound systems here in the US...
The only possible exception are the notebooks, which come "mostly" assembled from overseas, but final assembly is done here. The work plant in Austin (Optiplex) was moved to TN to join their Dimension line and notebook assembly facility.

Now the components in your computer, thats a completely different story.

Peace,

54. I hope mine will last that long.
It gets about 36 mpg and I never had a problem with it. I bought it after researching the used car reliability ratings on Consumer Reports. At that time, there weren't any comparable cars the Big 3 offered with the same kind of ratings and mpg.

Things have been changing a little and I'll look at the reliability ratings again should my Corolla go out on me. If the Big 3 offer a comparable car, I'd buy one of theirs.

67. I will never understand those who want to drag others down rather then raise people up
Why even be on a progressive board if you feel the better solution is to lower everyone's wages (except the ceo's) rather then rallying together to force companies to improve wages and benefits?

I really just don't fucking understand this.

So many on this board behave as if the UAW workers are wrong for demanding a living wage and that they should be satisfied with earning less, just because others do.

So again- If you are a proponent of lower wages and benefits, why are you here?

Really, honestly, why?

This is union busting- our wages will end up in the trash or benefits will become non existent.

81. It isn't that we believe that UAW workers are wrong
It's the fact that since most of us aren't getting paid well ourselves, we can't afford to throw away our money on a piece of junk that's going to cost us more in gas and repairs and still die an earlier death. So we look out for our own interests, which means that we buy a high quality. low cost cost foreign car. Then we come here and get our ass chewed out for not supporting the Big 3 by idiots like the OP.

Granted, Detroit is currently, note I use the word currently, making cars that are as good a quality as foreign makes. That means that when it comes time for people to buy new cars, domestics will get a good hard look, since they're now making a competitive product. But for so long they simply weren't, yet assholes continue to call us out for looking out for our own budgets. Sorry, but this is just flat out wrong. And the OP does himself no favors with his attitude and his inability to face criticism or even a civil debate. His answer to anything in that regards is to simply put people on ignore, like that really makes his case. Frankly being put on ignore by the likes of him is a relief.

85. The republicans are trying to destroy the last of the unions
As for the OP- he is freaking out as I probably would in the same situation.

We do need to buy american again, not just in cars but in many other things. Otherwise we will devolve into a 3rd world country and only when people are dying in the streets will the citizens rise up and unionize again.

It's such a complex issue- tempers are running high, people are afraid.

We all need to take a deep breath and think about what we want (as a whole) and how we can get there.

91. I agree with all you said,
Well, expect for the part about the OP, he's been freaking out in this manner ever since I met him here. DB is very much a "my way or the highway" type of person. I've been put on and taken off of ignore by him so many times it's ridiculous.

But yes, we do need to buy American, and I do whenever I can, and whenever it makes financial sense for me to do so. However to simply throw your money away, especially when you don't have much, all to say you buy American is foolish. Frankly autoworkers have always made more than me. I'm not complaining about that, good for them. But I feel little compulsion to subsidize their pay with mine when buying a car. I've got to make my money last, and the last two times I've bought a new car, the better long term deal has been to buy either a Toyota or a Honda. Granted, I understand that domestic autos are now reaching the standards of foreign cars, so the next time I buy, I'll seriously look at domestic makes. But the fact of the matter is that you can't expect most people to buy an American car unless it fits their needs, fits their budget and is a high quality product. People simply can't afford to do that.

Your cheap-ass Detroit Rustmobiles will be polluting the ground water as they fall apart.

And why do you think your union should support shoddy design, marketing and industrial planning, when it came from the bosses? When did YOU design a car? If you did design Detroit Rust, why didn't you make it better? Because the bosses told you to build crap!

If you didn't design it, market it or advertise it to the rubes, why are you taking responsibility for Detroit's fall? Why are you attacking the people telling the truth? Why aren't you attacking management? Why aren't you on a picket line beating the shit out of company goons? What kind of union guy are you, anyway?

Never mind. Rhetorical question. I already know what kind of union guy you are.
